Originally, Taunton Road was named Concession Road 4, It was an important route for early settlers and travelers in the 1900s, connecting various communities in the region. Many of these immigrants came from Somerset County, England, where there's also a place called Taunton. Over time, Taunton Road evolved into a key transportation artery, accommodating the growth and development of the area.
The street was renamed from Concession Road 4 to its name known today as Taunton Road, The road has witnessed significant changes and developments, reflecting the evolving needs of the local population.

Taunton Road is served predominantly by the Durham Regional Transit (DRT).
Routes# 915 (PULSE) and # 905 (Whitby Station to Port Perry & Uxbridge). Both routes turn away from Taunton Road. There are several routes serving the portions of the road. (Route # 915 runs 24 Hours a day.)
