Saint Demetrius Cathedral or Vidin Cathedral, formally Cathedral of the Holy Great-Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki (Bulgarian: Катедрала "Свети Великомъченик Димитрий Солунски"), is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the port city of Vidin on Danube, seat of the Metropolitan of the Vidin Diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It is the second largest church building in Bulgaria and one of the largest Orthodox church buildings in Southeastern Europe.[1] The foundation stone of the current cathedral building was laid in 1885. Actual construction began in 1889 and the building was structurally completed in 1900.[2]
The cathedral is a cultural monument of national importance and is one of the main landmarks of the city of Vidin and of Bulgaria. It is located in the center of the city and is visible from kilometers away - from the Danube river and from a large part of the city.
Saint Demetrius Cathedral is one of the world's largest still standing Orthodox cathedrals, which were structurally completed more than 120 years ago.
Vidin Cathedral is the largest church building in the world, which is dedicated to St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
With an internal height of 33 meters (from floor to ceiling)[1], the dome of Vidin Cathedral is the third tallest church dome in the Balkans and ranks among the tallest domes in the world.
The dimensions of the cathedral (outside) are as follows: length - about 45 meters; width - about 30 meters; height (from the ground to the top of the main cross) - about 45 meters.
