Kelly Adams-Smith is an American diplomat who is the nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to Moldova.
Early life and education
A New Jersey native, Adams-Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts from American University and a Master of Arts from Harvard University.[1]
Career
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Adams-Smith was a Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of Commerce.[2] In her career, Adams-Smith was the senior coordinator for National Security Affairs in the Office of the Vice President. Previously, she served as chargé d'affaires, ad interim. and deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Prague, Czech Republic. She has also served as economic counselor at the U.S. Embassy in London, as deputy executive secretary of the White House National Security Council, and as a faculty member at the National War College. Other overseas assignments include Sofia, Bulgaria; Tallinn, Estonia; and Moscow, Russia. Washington assignments include operations officer at the State Department's Operations Center.[1] Since July 1, 2021, she has served as the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Mission to the European Union.[3]
On March 14, 2024, President Joe Biden nominated Adams-Smith to serve as the next United States ambassador to Moldova.[4] Her nomination is pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.[5] On May 9, 2024, a hearing on her nomination was held before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.[6]
Personal life
Adams-Smith speaks Russian, Bulgarian, Estonian and Czech.[1]
