Kathleen M. Amm is an American physicist who is the director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida.
Education
After attending the University of Toronto, Amm received her undergraduate degree with a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics. She received her Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University with the National Magnet Lab’s founding] director, Jack Crow, as one of her advisors.[citation needed]
Career
Amm started her career as a physicist in the electromagnetic and superconductivity lab at GE Global Research.[1] She progressively assumed various leadership roles. Amm later directed the Magnet Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), spearheading advancements in superconducting magnet technology. In May 2024, she joined the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory as director,[2] overseeing facilities at Florida State University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of Florida.
Honors and awards
Amm is a member of the IEEE, holds 22 patents, and has co-authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications. In 2014, GE Global Research recognized her contributions to magnet technologies. Amm is certified in Design for Six Sigma Black Belt and MATRIZ.[citation needed]
