Kai Kamal Huening, known mononymously as Huening Kai is a South Korean-American singer under Big Hit Entertainment. He is a member of the South Korean boy band, TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
He is the maknae (youngest member) of the boy group TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
Early life and education
Kai Kamal Huening was born to a South Korean mother and a German-American Brazilian father. He lived in the US for about two months before moving to Beijing, China. He moved from Beijing, China to South Korea in 2009, through his South Korean mother.[1]
He attended Seoul Anam Elementary School and Yongmoon Middle School, where he opened a band, Yongmunjung Band, where he was the frontman and drummer.[2]
He auditioned for several companies with his older sister, Jung Lea, but was rejected repeatedly. He auditioned for an agency, where one employee at the agency he auditioned for last time transferred to Big Hit Music and casted him as a trainee, where he started as a trainee in June of 2016.[3]
He graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School on February 09, 2021.[4]
Career
2016: Auditioning for Big Hit Music
Initially, Kai had no intention of joining Big Hit Music, but he auditioned because one of the agencies he auditioned for earlier, had an employee which transferred to Big Hit Music. He got casted as a trainee in June 2016.
Huening Kai auditioned for Big Hit Music, where he performed the song "Give Love" by the duo Akdong Musician, "Sometimes" by Crush and "Sunday Morning" by Maroon 5[5], managing to pass the audition and become a trainee for two and a half years until his debut.
2019–present: Debut with TXT
In January 2019, Kai was the third confirmed member to join TOMORROW X TOGETHER, the second group made after BTS by Big Hit Music.[6]
The group debuted on March 4, 2019 with the mini album, The Dream Chapter: Star.
In October 2019, TOMORROW X TOGETHER released their second album, The Dream Chapter: Magic, which included the song "Roller Coaster" which was the first piece of music Kai had collaborated on as a composer, hence becoming the first TXT member to be registered with KOMCA.[7]
In May 2021, and with the release of the album, The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE , it was revealed that Huening Kai had served as both composer and producer on the song “Dear Sputnik.”
He has also appeared on various entertainment shows, like Running Man, Eunchae's Star Diary and The Return of Superman: Baby Cloud. He has also been an MC on Music Bank and on M Countdown.
