Esmehan Baharnaz Hanım Sultan ( Istanbul , c. 1525 – Ottoman Empire, c. 1559 ) was an Ottoman princess, the daughter of Sah Sultan and Lutfi Pasha[1]. Her mother was the half-sister of Suleiman the Magnificent , and her father was the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire . Esmehan was the granddaughter of Selim I , the niece of Suleiman I, and the cousin of Selim II

Life

Esmehan Baharnaz was born in 1525. Her father was Lütfi Pasha , and her mother was Sah Sultan , the daughter of Yavuz Sultan Selim and the half-sister of Suleiman the Magnificent. As the daughter of an Ottoman prince, she was given the title of Hanım Sultan .[2]

According to what is known, Esmehan Baharnaz spent her entire life in Istanbul, near Topkapi Palace . In 1539, her father became the Grand Vizier, but this did not last long, in 1541 her father ordered the burning of the private parts of a woman accused of adultery . Her mother, the Sah, was enraged and confronted him for what he had done, and during the argument, Lütfi Pasha hit his wife; whereupon the Sah called his servants and they arrested and beat him.[3]

After this incident, her parents divorced and her father was stripped of all his titles and subsequently exiled to Didymoteicho , Greece , where he died in 1564.

Esmehan married Hüseyn Pasha in 1540 and had two daughters from this marriage.[4]

The cause of Esmehan's death is unknown, but some historians state that she suffered from depression and may have died because of it. He was buried in his mother's mausoleum in Istanbul.
