History

In 1858 Benjamin Urner owned a printing company. Merchants would come to Urner to get their price lists printed; Urner noticed a wide disparity between different offering levels. Recognizing the need for stakeholders to have independent, reliable information, he would canvass the marketplace and eventually started publication of the "Producers Price Current" which covered trading levels for food and agricultural items as traded in the New York City wholesale market.

By 1882, Frank Barry and Sons began publishing the Producers’ Price-Current as a daily circular. As a result, the two companies merged into the Urner Barry Company, which became Urner Barry Publications.

In 1982, Urner Barry launched COMTELL, a comprehensive market data platform providing real-time pricing and market analysis for agricultural commodities, revolutionizing information access.

In 1982, Mintec was founded to provide market intelligence and price data to businesses.

In 2017, Mintec launched Mintec Analytics, a sophisticated platform providing enhanced market insights and decision-making capabilities.

In 2021, Mintec acquired Kairos Commodities, a leading commodity market analysis and forecasting provider, also becoming the first IOSCO-assured PRA in the agrifood markets.

In 2022, Mintec acquired CommoPrices, an independent provider of commodity price data and analysis.

In 2023, Mintec acquired AgriBriefing, which included the brands Urner Barry, Feedinfo, Stratégie Grains, and Tropical Research Services, extending its reach into the agriculture, food, and animal feed sectors.

In 2024, Mintec consolidated all its operations under a unified brand name, Expana, becoming a cohesive powerhouse in the industry. Expana delivers integrated solutions and drives innovation across diverse offerings, continuing the legacy of its foundational brands.
