Early Life and Education

Ethan Mark Nestor (né Nestor,) (Middle name was chosen after his father Mark) was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He was a dedicated gymnast during his childhood, winning medals in tournaments for his talents. In 2015, after his series of videos with his grandma became quite successful, he struggled to find an audience for videos that didn't feature her. He decided to create his new (current) channel so that he could make the content he wanted and wasn't being pressured to exploit his grandmother for views. It was around this time that Ethan dyed his hair blue for charity. This blue hair became an iconic part of his look for a while following this until he dyed his hair back to brown.[2]

He graduated from CEHS (Cape Elizabeth High School) in 2015. After graduating, Ethan had a difficult decision to make between staying in gymnastics and going to college, which he had been involved in for most of his life, or trying to go somewhere on YouTube. So, he decided to move to Portland, Maine and take a gap year to focus on YouTube. He considered going to Full Sail University in Florida and living with his uncle, but never applied for college and ended up sticking to posting videos.

Ethan's pursuit of YouTube was inspired by several YouTubers, including the GameGrumps, Pewdiepie and Markiplier. He met Mark at a couple of conventions, being remembered as 'backflip dude' after backflipping for Mark at 2 different conventions. After this, the two kept in contact, becoming friends, until 2016 when Ethan agreed to move out to LA and become one of Mark's editors. He edited for Mark and collaborated with him on multiple videos until 2018 when Ethan became fully committed to his channel instead.

Following the 2020 countrywide protests against racism and police brutality in the United States, Ethan condemned the murder of George Floyd and expressed his support for the Black Lives Matter movement, later encouraging his audience to sign online petitions related to the cause. Ethan endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election, as well as urged his followers via social media to exercise their civic duty to vote.[3]

He also has a 7-year-old half-brother. His name is Andrew J. and, following in his stepdad's footsteps, he is a graphic designer. Andrew is also a musician and artist. The two have collaborated on music, including a Christmas album released in December 2018. Ethan has a cousin named Colson, who owns a channel named "Colson's Critters".[6]https://crinkgumplz.fandom.com/wiki/Ethan#:~:text=His%20first%20video%20%2D%20named%20%22Dirty,Cranky%20Vlogs%22%20in%20May%202013}}</ref>

Ethan watched a lot of Markiplier's videos and first met Mark in person at a Pax East Panel called "Markiplier and Friends" in 2014. He talked to Bob and worked it out to do a backflip in front of the famous Markiplier. He flipped for Mark (and a group of fans along with a few other YouTubers) outside of the PAX building. He made a vlog of his entire PAX experience (at about 18:00 he meets Mark) and the video is on his old channel. He also backflipped for Mark the next year at Pax 2015 and was remembered as the "backflip dude."

From then on Mark and Ethan became friends and in November of 2016, Mark asked Ethan if he wanted to move out to L. A with him and edit his videos. Ethan gladly agreed and on November 1, 2016, he moved out to Los Angeles. Ethan now lives alone. He used to work for Mark, but as of March 8, 2018, he has become fully committed to YouTube and his channel.

Unus Annus

On November 13, 2019, Mark and Ethan made a joint channel called Unus Annus, with the intent of uploading one video per day for the entire year. Once a year had passed, they were to delete the channel without preserving any of its content, as both believed that this should be a unique, one-in-a-lifetime experience that they get to share with their audience. The channel's disclaimer stated that any re-uploads of Unus Annus' videos without their permission would be met with a takedown notice.[7]</ref>

On Friday, November 13, 2020, from 12 pm to 12 am PT, Mark and Ethan held a twelve-hour livestream to commemorate Unus Annus' run, later ending the broadcast by deleting the channel, along with all of its videos. The following day, Ethan expressed his final thoughts on the channel's conclusion.

On November 14, 2021, around midnight Pacific Standard Time, Mark and Ethan uploaded a separate video on their main channels titled "Memento Mori" in which they paid respects to the now defunct Unus Annus channel on its death day, as well as reflected on their one year journey since the series' conclusion. For their work on Unus Annus, Mark and Ethan won the Best Collaboration award at the 11th Annual Streamy Awards.

On January 28, 2021, Ethan took a month-long break due to the concern for his mental health, while also distancing himself from social media. While on hiatus, Ethan consulted a mental health professional and used his free time to relocate to a new home. He returned on March 1, 2021, to announce his upcoming show titled "I Have to do this show" which was scheduled to debut on November 21, 2021, in Chicago, Illinois.[8]</ref>
