Daniel James Phillips (born 8 December 1965) [1] [2] [3] is an American musician known for his work as a Jazz guitarist[4] composer, and band leader. He has led several groups, including the Chicago Edge Ensemble [1] Quartet Next, Dan Phillips Trio[1], and Dan Phillips Quartet. [1][2][3] Phillips has participated in international performances and workshops in the United States, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Austria, Singapore and at international jazz festivals alongside artists such as Jakob Dinesen, including appearances at concerts during the CPH Jazz Festival.[5] [6]

Biography

Phillips was born in Springfield, Illinois. He pursued his education in music, obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University.[2][3][7][8]

Phillips has worked extensively in various cities, including New York, Chicago.[3][9] Bangkok[10] and Tokyo, as well as touring internationally. He has collaborated with notable jazz musicians such as Hamid Drake[11][12] Gerald Wilson, Danilo Pérez, Avreeayl Ra, and many others.As a band leader, Phillips has received critical acclaim for his ensembles, particularly the Chicago Edge Ensemble. He has released numerous albums both as a solo artist and with his various groups, showcasing his skills as a guitarist and composer. [3][4][5][6]

Phillips's Chicago Edge Ensemble has gathered recognition for his work, notably, his album releases like Insidious Anthem (Trost, 2018) and Decaying Orbit (Music+, 2017) and his third release[13], The Individualists.[13]The group was led by Phillips, and the ensemble's lineup underwent changes, incorporating talents like cornetist Josh Berman, trombonist Jeb Bishop, and drummer Hamid Drake.[3][4][5][6][7][9][13]
