Ocean Keeper - is a survival roguelike isometric action game developed by the Ukrainian studio RetroStyle Games. It combines the depth of strategic gameplay with fast-paced action, set in a mysterious underwater world explored by space pirates.[1]

Gameplay

Ocean Keeper uniquely blends several game genres, integrating elements of roguelikes, simulation, strategy, and action-roguelikes. It starts with exploration and resource extraction, where players must strategically manage their resources, reminiscent of classic roguelikes. This stage involves finding and exploring underwater caves scattered throughout the location, where players can find the resources and relics they need.

The game transitions into more dynamic combat sequences typical of action-roguelikes. Players must quickly make decisions to fend off monster attacks using both primary and secondary weapons. The action is intense, with a focus on aiming and maneuvering around enemies and bosses. However, Ocean Keeper also allows for quieter moments where players can dig up resource blocks and choose upgrades at their own pace, balancing the fast-paced action with more meditative elements.[2]

Graphics and Mechanics

Ocean Keeper showcases more elaborate three-dimensional graphics, enhancing the traditional roguelike experience with more action-oriented visuals. The game features a meta-advancement mechanic, allowing players to permanently upgrade their characteristics and purchase new weapons. This system helps players progress further and deeper with each new session, continually improving their gameplay experience.

Strategy and Resource Management

In contrast to most action-roguelikes, which often emphasize quick reflexes and dynamic movements, Ocean Keeper requires players to think strategically about resource investment and weapon combinations. Effective allocation of resources and meta-currency is crucial for long-term survival, providing a gameplay experience that requires both tactical planning and quick decision-making.

Development

Developed without external publishers, Ocean Keeper was crafted by RetroStyle Games with creative freedom, focusing on a detailed underwater world filled with unique challenges and enemies. The developers aimed to fuse classic roguelike elements with innovative action-packed gameplay to create a deep and engaging game.[3]
