Prevalence

How many of these are "cite web" templates missing a "website" parameter? On most of the pages where I find this category, I can't see anything obviously in need to be fixed. Nemo 16:09, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Probably quite a few. When a widely used template or module changes, it can take weeks, or even months, for category membership to update. Sometimes the error messages are hard to pick out from the text. You can search the article for the word "requires" to jump to any "missing periodical" error messages that are present. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:53, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
website errors linger from the initial change 3 September. website and news error messaging was reverted 7 September. If you want to see those error messages (and the journal and magazine messaging) that that linger add this to you personal css: 
.citation-comment {display: inline !important;}
it will also show you the currently hidden deprecated parameter error messaging.

Drafts

Although the category page states "Pages in the ... Draft ... namespaces are not included in the error tracking categories", I see that Draft:2b2t (server) is included. Could someone please change the categorization to exclude drafts, or change the message to indicate that drafts are included? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:21, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

publisher should exempt pages from this category

The {{Cite journal}} template is intended for academic peer-reviewed articles. Some of these are published by corporations, universities or organizations where the publisher parameter makes more sense than the website parameter, but without a website parameter or an alias thereof, articles are put in this category. I believe this is a mistake. A well-chosen publisher should exempt a page from this category. —Anomalocaris (talk) 23:33, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If the article is published in a journal, there should be something to put in |journal=. If it is not from a journal, a different template should probably be used (e.g. cite web). There has been occasional discussion suggesting that it might be appropriate for cs1 to support {{cite paper}} as a native template (not, as it is now, a redirect to {{cite journal}}). Perhaps someday there will be sufficient need for such a template.
For your examples:
  • 1,2,4-Butanetriol trinitrate – DTIC doesn't link to the patent application that it describes; to cite the DTIC page consider {{cite web}}; if appropriate, to cite the patent, consider {{cite patent}}
  • 8.2 kiloyear event – The purpose of this report ... so consider {{cite report}}
  • random #1 – don't abuse |postscript= in {{cite journal}} to provide conference details, consider {{cite conference}}
  • random #2 – might be a candidate for a {{cite paper}} template but, published on the web, so consider {{cite web}}
  • random #3 – sourced from ssrn so consider {{cite ssrn}}
No doubt, there are other options.

These points lead editors, including me until now, to believe {{cite journal}} is the right template for academic and scientific papers even if never published in a bona fide journal.
If Wikipedia really does not want users to use {{cite journal}} for papers not published in a bona fide journal, {{cite journal}} should be modified to say so, and there should probably be a hatnote along the lines of "{{cite paper}} redirects here. To reference a paper that wasn't published in a journal, please use one of the other templates in the Citation Style 1 templates box on this page." —Anomalocaris (talk) 23:28, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Difficulty finding missing periodicals at times

In articles that use a lot of journal references, it is time consuming to search through them all to find whichever one is missing the periodical. Example: Ebola is tagged as missing a periodical but it is time consuming to search for it. An above comment by Jonesey95 says that searching for "requires" can find the reference but this does not work for me and I have not noticed any error messages for missing periodicals (see for example this with two references). Is there not an error message (like for missing title, missing URL, etc.) or is the error message not functioning? Velayinosu (talk) 01:56, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Because it calls itself a 'Preliminary report', you might use {{cite report}}:

You can suppress the report annotation by setting |type=none.
Or, might it not be better to discard the citation entirely because at the end of the sentence where it is used, the journal article of the same report is cited?
