Card games in the marriage group are ace–ten games in which there is a bonus for holding certain pairs of the same suit. This bonus is called a 'marriage' if playing with French-suited cards, because it usually involves a king and queen combination, or a 'pair' if using e.g. German-suited cards, which usually involves an Ober and Unter.

Other typical combinations are queen and jack or jack and nine.
