Digital audio is sound (often music or speech) which is recorded (born-digital) or converted from analog sources and stored in a digital format. Digital audio can be stored on a variety of storage media, including compact disc, audio CD, audio DVD, DAT tape, or as a computer file. Playing equipment decodes the stored signal.

In recent years, the music industry has seen a series of changes, for example from analogue cassette players to portable mp3 players to smartphones and other mobile devices. Today, music is often downloaded from the Internet in MP3 format and similarly compressed formats. It is often stored on portable storage devices or played directly from the cloud.
