Appa (title)

Appa(Marathi: अप्पा)(Kannada: ಅಪ್ಪ), was a honorific title conferred to the Lingayat and Maratha Rulers of Karnataka and Maharashtra region.[1][2][3] It was a title used to indicate administrator of a region which means 'head' or 'Father'.[4][5] It is now used as a surname in certain regions of India, especially in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana whose family received it as a title[6][7][8][9].
