The 2025 New York City mayoral election will be held on November 4, 2025. Incumbent mayor Eric Adams is running for re-election to a second term.

Background

Eric Adams was elected mayor of New York City in 2021, narrowly emerging from a contested primary election and defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Adams' tenure has been characterized by controversy, with the mayor supporting tough-on-crime policies such as the reintroduction of plainclothes police officers and increased policing in the city's subway system.[1][2] Adams has also received criticism for his handling of the migrant housing crisis,[3] the FBI investigation into his 2021 campaign,[4] and his support for zero tolerance policies against the homeless.[5] A December 2023 poll published by Quinnipiac University showed Adams' approval rating at 28% among registered voters, the lowest approval of any mayor since the institution began polling in the city in 1996.[6] Due to Adams' unpopularity, speculation has arisen about the potential for a left-wing primary challenger to his re-election bid.[7]
