Template talk:Class/colour
Proposed move
I propose that this template be moved to Template:Class/col, for the following reasons:
- "Classcol" is quite confusing not very descriptive.
- Although it is not currently used exclusively by Template:Class, it will when all the banners have been updated and the old-style templates (e.g. {{a-class}}) have been deprecated.
— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- We should take the opportunity to
strike a blow for real Englishfurther clarify the use of the template (:D) by moving it to Template:Class/colour instead. Happy‑melon 23:15, 4 February 2010 (UTC)- Ooh, controversial! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:28, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Audio-Class
I see WP:Louisville are now using "Audio-Class", for which no colour is defined here. Since this is effectively a(nother) sub class of "File-Class", I propose it be assigned the same colour (#ddccff). Any objections? PC78 (talk) 11:55, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
- This was suggested in the original discussion but I pointed out that the project is also using Image-class and so a different colour would probably be preferable. Also I don't see any harm in leaving it colourless until we get a request from the project. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:16, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- As an aside, I've updated {{Articles by Quality}} to allow for custom classes, so now Audio is shown on Category:Louisville articles by quality. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:53, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Nice! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:34, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I see WOSlinker made the same suggestion as I in that discussion. ;) I don't see any inherant problem in using the same colour in this case, nor do I think it would be inappropriate to do so without a request from the project. They would, of course, be free to request a change at a later date, but it's perhaps reasonable to assume that they aren't that bothered one way or another. I don't think it should be left colourless, though. PC78 (talk) 10:54, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- I would have no objections to using the same colour for Audio as Image & File. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:52, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well seems a bit pointless to me, but I suppose I don't object either. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:41, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Done I've added audio. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Some wikiprojects are using "SIA" as an assessment class for "set index articles" with its own category (e.g. Category:SIA-Class Spiders articles). (Other wikiprojects, like WP:PLANTS, use |class=sia
but alias this to "List-Class" at present, but could separate out SIAs in future.) Please add:
| sia = #ccaaff
to the template to produce a similar, but lighter, colour to that for List-Class. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:25, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

SL-Class
Just a thought, but SL-Class (currently used only by WP:PLANTS) is equivalent to both Stub and Start Class. It might therefore be more logical for SL-Class to use a blend of those two colours, i.e. #FF8866 , rather than the same colour as Stub-Class. PC78 (talk) 23:24, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Proposed change to Current-Class and User-Class
I'd like to propose making the following colour changes for Current-Class and User-Class:
Current | Proposed | |
---|---|---|
Current-Class | #d462ff | #d870ff |
User-Class | #999900 | #b5b546 |
It's only a subtle change, the new colours are similar to those we use now but are slightly more muted and more in keeping with the overall scheme. Any objections? PC78 (talk) 23:54, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

- No objections raised to the above proposal, please update this sub-template with the code at {{class/colour/sandbox}}. Testcases, if need be, at {{class/colour/testcases}}, though it's a simple enough change. PC78 (talk) 00:01, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

{{WikiProject Portals}} uses FPo-Class for Featured Portals, but the class in the banner has a transparent background (example: Portal talk:Africa) instead of the #6699ff
colour that the other featured classes use.
Please add the line
| fpo = #6699ff
as per this edit to the sandbox (see testcases). - Evad37 [talk] 01:12, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Bplus has merged to B

Replace Template:Class/colour with Template:Class/colour/sandbox. This merges Bplus/B+ to B, per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 June 30#Bplus-Class articles. Has been tested, at Template:Class/colour/testcases. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 12:37, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Please update with the version currently in the sandbox. This implements:
- the changes made by Redrose64, to make it obvious which classes are using the same colour
- the changes made by SMcCandlish to merge B+ to B-class, per the above edit request
- new classes that WikiProject Portals has adopted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals/Assessment
- Evad37 [talk] 03:10, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- I believe the first and second points above are uncontroversial. I am a little unsure about the third because we are adding a lot of new custom classes which will be only used by one project. I also cannot see any recent discussion about this on the project's talk page. Please can you point me towards any relevant discussions? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:01, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- @MSGJ: The original (very long) thread can be found at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals/Archive 6 § Proposed new quality class assessments. The final agreed-upon classes are at the bottom of the page. — AfroThundr (u · t · c) 11:13, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- @MSGJ: There's already several classes which are only used by one or only a few projects, such as SL, Merge, and to a lesser extent CL (several task forces, but MILHIST is the only project there). What's the harm of having a few more, especially as they only show up in project banners etc when a custom class mask which has those classes specified is used? - Evad37 [talk] 14:40, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- Okay I accept your points. It would be more ideal if these colours could be set locally, but there is currently no way to do this.

Color scheme doesn't meet accessibility requirements
Currently, the "Featured", "Stub", "List", "Current", "Future", "SIA", "SL", "Draft", and "Portal" levels violate the accessibility requirements of WP:COLOR when standard blue link text is used in the foreground. I am proposing changing the template to the follow values, which meet the WCAG 2.0 AA requirements for normal-sized text and the AAA requirements for large text:
Old Output | Old Colour | New Output | New Colour |
---|---|---|---|
#6699ff |
Featured | #9CBDFF |
Featured |
#ff6666 |
Stub | #FFA4A4 |
Stub |
#aa88ff |
List | #C7B1FF |
List |
#d870ff |
Current | #E6A4FF |

#8a95ff |
Future | #B4BBFF |
Future |
#ccaaff |
SIA | #E9DAFF |

#ff6666 |
SL | #FFA4A4 |

Definitely an improvement, except the new versions of SL and Stub are hard to read (Current, too, but not quite a bad). There's insufficient luminosity and contrast difference between the letters and the background (whether AAA says so or not). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 12:59, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Further colour changes required
In reference to the above discussion from last year, I note that the colours presently used for Deferred-Class and User-Class also fail the same accessibility requirements. I would therefore like to suggest that we change these to the following values to bring them in line with the rest:
Old Output | Old Colour | New Output | New Colour |
---|---|---|---|
#999999 |
Deferred | #D1BCAC |
Deferred |
#b5b546 |
User | #DDD06A |
User |
As per above, the new colours meet the WCAG 2.0 AA requirements for normal-sized text and the AAA requirements for large text. PC78 (talk) 15:13, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

- Please update this subtemplate with the sandboxed code at Template:Class/colour/sandbox. The following changes are made:
- Colours for Deferred-Class and User-Class changed per above.
- Added common synonyms that are used in {{Class mask}}, i.e. "disamb" for Disambig, "redir" for Redirect, "tpl" for Template, etc.
- Code tidied and caps used for all hex triplets (for the sake of consistency).
- Should it be necessary, sandboxed code is tested at Template:Class/colour/testcases and Template:Class/colour/doc/sandbox. PC78 (talk) 17:52, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
