Talk:List of Italian-American women writers

Page title

I recently moved this list to the title List of Italian-American women writers and the move was promptly reversed citing the following explanation: "[b]ecause the Wiki article is listed as Italian American and not everyone types a hyphen, so we need to ensure people can find the page easi[ly]".

There are three considerations here:

  1. Capitalization – Article naming guidelines state that "the second or subsequent words in an article title" should not be capitalized, unless the title or word(s) are proper nouns that always should be capitalized. Neither "women" nor "writers" meets that exception and, therefore, they should not be capitalized.
  2. Hyphenation – In the title of the article Italian American, the phrase correctly is not hyphenated as one should not hyphenate "Italian American" when it is used as a noun. Statements such as "an Italian American is..." or "Italian Americans are..." should not contain a hyphen. However, in the phrase "Italian-American women", the identifier functions as a compound modifier, which generally should be hyphenated. For comparison, see Lists of African Americans (unhyphenated) and List of African-American astronauts (hyphenated). Also see Hyphenated American#American English: "The hyphen is employed when the compound term is used as an adjective. Hence, correct forms include an African American and an African-American man."
  3. Accessibility – When a page is moved, a redirect is automatically created that will help readers to find the article even if they do not type the exact title.

Therefore, I propose that the list be returned to its previous title: List of Italian-American women writers. -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:32, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support move per points two and three of Black Falcon's reasoning above. This is the way it has been done on Wikipedia. Nothing new here. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 10:20, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support as appropriate uses of hyphens. The latter actually works either way. Without the hyphen, it's the leftism of African Americans. With, it's leftism of an African-American character. --BDD (talk) 17:24, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
