Maulana Seyed Mohammad Reza Bin Agha Seyed Mohammad Baqer Imam (March 20, 1899[1] – December 9, 1993) was an Iranian Muslim scholar and Grand Mufti.[2] He was born in 1899 in Gookad district of Golpayegan, Iran. He was taught preliminary studies by his father, Maulana Agha Seyed Mohammad Baqer Imam. At the age of 9, his father died and he later on moved to Golpaygan to continue his studies.

Family and early life

Seyed Mohammad Reza was born on the eighth day of the month of Dhu al-Qi'dah 1316 AH in the Gookad district of Golpayegan. Due to the closeness of his birthday with the birthday of the eighth Imam, Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (peace be upon him), he was named "Mohammad Reza," with the honorific "Abu al-Hasan" and the title "Hibatullah." His father, Agha Seyed Mohammad Baqer Imam, was a scholar known for his piety and devotion to religious practices and was diligent in enjoining good and forbidding wrong.
