Katznelson is a Jewish Ashkenazi surname derived from the name of the former German principality of Katzenellenbogen.[1] Protection money paid by Jews was the main source of income for the small principality.[1] Variant spellings of the surname derived from the toponym like Katzenelenbogen and Katznelbogen have led to further variations like Katzeneleson, Kazenelson, Kaznelson,[1] by addition of -son, 'son'.
