Froylán "Froy" Gutierrez (born April 27, 1998)[1][2] is an American actor and singer,[3] known for playing Nolan Holloway in Teen Wolf and Jamie Henson in Cruel Summer. He is also known for his part as Ryan in the first instalment of an intended standalone trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 1. Gutierrez released his first single, "Sideswipe", in 2018.[4]

Personal life

Gutierrez was born and raised in Highland Park, Texas and attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.[5] He is of Caxcan and Mexican descent through his father, and grew up bilingual by learning both English and Spanish.[6][3] After an agent saw him in a Dallas Children's Theater play, he began submitting audition tapes in 2015.[3][5]

He also experienced racist bullying and was part of a performance group at Planned Parenthood, where he worked on peer-to-peer outreach with other adolescents.[5][7] "Growing up, I was surrounded by these very macho boys that would bully me," he explained. "I was afraid of them ... I was attacked by them as a kid all the time."[8] Gutierrez came out as gay on August 7, 2023, when he and actor Zane Phillips announced their relationship over Instagram.[9]

Career

After making his television debut in 2015 as Charlie in Nickelodeon's Bella and the Bulldogs, in 2017, Gutierrez appeared in the final season of Teen Wolf and on the first season of One Day at a Time.[10] He was one of the two narrators in the audiobook version of Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera's 2018 young adult LGBT romantic comedy What If It's Us and its 2022 sequel Here's To Us.[11] In 2019, he was cast in the second season of Hulu's television series Light as a Feather.[12] In 2021, he had his first series regular role as Jamie in Freeform's teen drama Cruel Summer, which received generally positive reviews and became the most-watched overall series debut ever on the channel.[7][13]

After that, Gutierrez has appeared in several feature films including the 2020 slasher film Initiation. Gregory Lawrence of Collider was positive in his review of the film, giving it a grade of A−. He described it as "a unique indie horror-thriller, one with an unprecedented sense of maturity in its filmmaking and thematic aims".[14] In 2022, Gutierrez starred alongside Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in Hocus Pocus 2; a sequel to the 1993 film Hocus Pocus. The film earned three nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Television Movie. Disney later reported that Hocus Pocus 2 was Disney+'s most-viewed film.[15][16] In 2023, Gutierrez starred alongside Riverdale actress Madelaine Petsch in The Strangers: Chapter 1.[8][17] Directed by Renny Harlin, the movie received mixed reviews from critics but over-performed at the box-office and finished in third behind IF and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, for a worldwide total of $42.9 million against an $8.5 million budget.[18][19]
