Example of steps taken in systematic microscopy, seen on an H&E stained example of basal-cell carcinoma of the skin:
- Naked eye evaluation: Number of levels on the same glass slide, and separate fragments to make sure not to miss.
- Orientation: In this case oriented by the skin surface (green). A lesion is seen (red) and its delimitation can be discerned (diffuse in this case)
- Architectural pattern (in this case nests of cells)
- Cellular arrangement, including crowding, or palisading in this case. Amount of mitoses can also be appreciated.
