Summary

Description
English: Hanamenn Hunt and family, one of the Samoan families living in Queensland

The Maota Fono Community Meeting House was opened in November 2003 by the Governor Ms Quentin Bryce and the Honourable Dean Wells, enabling the area's Pacific Islander population to retain important links to their culture. Its construction was part of the Deception Bay Community Renewal Program. Its design is based on the original Maota in Apia, Samoa, where village leaders (pulenu'u) meet every week.

The community meeting house underpins the significance of the regional Samoan community. It is used for meetings of the Council of Chiefs, traditional celebrations, community education and a range of cultural events where the Samoan and wider communites are welcome. Visitors from other parts of Queensland, Australia and overseas come to visit the Maota Fono in Deception Bay.
