Summary

Description
Norsk nynorsk: Våpen for Sarpsborg kommune i Østfold fylke, godkjent ved kongeleg resolusjon 11. mars 1966.
Motiv: På gull bunn en gående svart bjørn over en svart borg.[1] Kommunevåpenet til Sarpsborg vart laga i samband med 950-årsjubileet til byen i 1966. Våpenet har røter til Kong Olav Haraldson, mannen som grunnla byen Borg i 1016. Denne byen var opphavleg ei borg med voll og ei grav rundt. Med borg i namnet var det rimeleg at ei borg vart motiv i byvåpenet. Bjørnen kjem frå Alv Erlingssøn, som vart utnemnt til jarl av Sarpsborg i 1285. Merket hans var ein bjørn.
