English: A Rayleigh differential refractometer (interferometer) at the Automotive Laboratory at NBS utilizes interference phenomena to determine the difference in refractive index between two samples of a distillate. The number of time-consuming, freezing-point determinations needed to evaluate a distillation is materially reduced through the use of this interferometer. In the evaluation of the relative purity of successive distillation fractions, the differences in the refractive index are determined with a precision of better than one part in a million. A test requires about 5 minutes using 3 to 4 mL of sample, most of which may be recovered. (Operator: E. H. Rich) |
