English: The subject of this painting, previously held to be unknown by consensus, is being discussed as a portrait of famous scientist Robert Hooke (discoverer of biological cells). It is argued by Prof. Larry Griffing that knowledge of the identity of the sitter was suppressed by Isaac Newton's influence, as Hooke's theories might claim precedence to Newton's.
