« Jadis, les déménagements étaient un phénomène urbain. On attendait que l’hiver soit terminé pour procéder. C’était évidemment plus simple ainsi. On devait alors se rendre chez un notaire pour signer un bail avec son propriétaire. L’événement se passait généralement aux alentours du 1er mai. Ce sera l’intendant François Bigot qui, en 1749, formalisera cette date. Dans une ordonnance du 20 avril 1749, il défend aux habitants des campagnes de venir s’établir à Québec, et ce, dans le but d’éviter que des terres agricoles ne soient abandonnées. En conclusion de l’ordonnance il précise: « [...] qu'à partir du 1er mai prochain, tous particuliers de Québec et des faubourgs qui loueront des maisons ou chambres à des gens dont l'état leur sera inconnu ou qu'ils pourront soupçonner être des habitants de la campagne seront tenus d'aller déclarer au lieutenant-général de police, trois jours après qu'ils auront loué, les noms, surnoms et profession de leurs locataires à peine contre les contrevenants de cent livres d'amende. » English: Moving scene, Montreal, 1st May, frontpage of L'Opinion publique, Montreal, vol.
