English: Fig. 8. Adherence mechanism of AIEC: Ⓐ AIEC attaches to the epithelium cells in the small intestine. Ⓑ Type I pili of AIEC binds with the adhesion molecule CAECAM6 present in the brush borders of the epithelium cell. Ⓒ CAECAM6 transit the AIEC into the epithelial cells. Ⓓ ExPEC bacteria enter into the macrophage cells. Ⓔ ExPEC bacteria survive and replicate inside the macrophages. Ⓕ Macrophages secrete a high level of TNF-α. Ⓖ TNF-α causes granuloma formation in the host epithelial cells.
