Housden

Nicholas Edward Housden (born 19 June 1990) is a British Politician who served on Stroud District from 2021 - 2024 and Gloucestershire County Council from 2021 - present. From 2022 - 2023, Housden served as Cabinet Member for Public Health & Levelling Up for Gloucestershire. Housden successfully won the Stonehouse Seat in 2021 Gloucestershire County Council election defeating the Labour candidate by 454 votes.

Personal life

Housden is the son of Mark Housden and Linda Wicks, he is one of six siblings with four brothers John Rees, Paul Housden, Robert Housden and Edward Housden and one sister Georgina Rees. Housden is believed to have had a troubled and turbulent relationship with his father who left the family home during his childhood. Little is known about Housden's personal life thereafter until he married Jade Marie Scotford at Clearwell Castle in 2015. The two divorced two years later. Housden then fathered two Children with Saghar Shemirani - Winston Colin Housden (2020) and Lyla Margaret Housden (2022)

During his childhood Housden attended Severn Vale School where a former teacher Mr Hunt described him as 'incredibly bright with impressive vision and grasp of society for one so young, but with little regard for the rules or social norms' Housden followed onto Hartpury College where he studied Sport, Performance & Excellence in Football between 2006 - 2008. Housden went on to work for various professional football clubs including Notts County F.C. (2011 - 2013) and Cheltenham Town F.C. as a youth coach (2009 - 2011), and later Talent ID Manager (2017 - 2020).

Since 2008 Housden was listed as director of a number of limited companies: GameSpex, GameSpex Ltd, Nicholas Housden & Associates, Bridge Football Academy Ltd, Bridge Youth Services Ltd, Phinix Events, Phinix Events & Memorabilia and Carlton Club Stroud Ltd. Housden and his fellow directors at Bridge James Thompson & Gerard McGinty were awarded new business of the year in 2021, and Bridge attracted good publicity for the work it did in supporting young people not in mainstream education, something Housden was passionate about. However in 2022 things turned sour when the relationship broke down between the directors, with McGinty accusing Housden of Assault, Housden was charged but later acquitted of Assault at Cirencester Crown Court in December 2023. Housden remains the sole director of Carlton Club Stroud Ltd with the company active today.

Political beliefs

Housden is a controversial figure in Politics. His supporters have praised him for being humorous, witty, and he is seen as someone who connects well with the electorate, with an appeal reaching beyond traditional Conservative Party voters. His critics point to criminal conviction for Blackmail, for which he pled guilty (2010) and being charged with assault (2022) for which he pled not guilty. He was later acquitted in December 2023. Critics argue he should not have been allowed to stand for election. Housden appears well supported within the party having been supported by two Prime Minister's Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak and 1922 Committee Member Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, who all supported him on local issues. In 2023 Housden was elected as Chairman for the Stroud Conservative Club and has been praised for the updates and financial stability he has brought to the organisation after a turbulent time during the pandemic. Critics argue Housden put finance before public safety when the club was subjected to a licence review late in 2023. The club was able to continue trading as normal following the review and Housden was critical of the Police, stating political bias had been shown in brining the review. The police held no objections to the club remaining open at the hearing, stating a 'positive co-operative relationship moving forward'

Housden was responsible for the launch of Levelling Up Together, a grant scheme launched by Gloucestershire County Council aiming to narrow inequalities, regenerate high streets, market towns and neighbourhoods, improve infrastructure, jobs & skills. Housden announced in October 2022 he has secured £1.5m in funding for the scheme. Housden met with Nadine Dorries Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport who showed support for local leaders driving levelling up. The scheme has mixed feedback with some pointing to the clear support and improvements the scheme has instigated, with critics saying it does not go far enough - being a 'sticking plaster' for wider spread deep routed issues.

Housden worked closely with Siobhan Baillie on a number of local projects across Stroud, including the creation of Stonehouse Market. The project was well received by the community. but struggled to sustain it's early success before the CIC behind it closed two years later. Critics point to the £40,000 Housden granted to the project, which closed two years later. Housden is credited with a successful Defibrillator programme for his ward of Stonehouse in which he secured funding from the Build Back Better Councillors Fund and has been seen granting funds for a number of community groups including Stonehouse Town F.C.

Whilst in post as Cabinet Member for Public Health (2022) for Gloucestershire County Council Housden gave his overview on the National Health Service (NHS) stating it needed 'Total reform from top to bottom. Politicians and the public need to have proper grown up conversations about the NHS - the time to do that is now. We cannot simply keep trying to provide free healthcare to everyone for everything. Free at the point of use is what we all want to keep, but the Politicians need to be strong enough to say those that can pay for non life threating services should'

Housden voted to close a care facility in his ward, against large public opposition in July 2022. Housden justified his decision by stating "The existing home was not suitable to meet the care needs of residents in the future, so the council has recommended to rebuild a purpose built facility there. This facility will provide care, employment and investment in the area. That is why I voted for the closure".

Personal views

Housden is a strong supporter of Autism-friendly and has campaigned for greater awareness and understanding of Autism. Housden has also campaigned strongly against Knife Crime across Gloucestershire. Housden has since revealed publicly that his son in Autistic. He holds various strong political beliefs including: Supporter of Brexit where he felt Great Britain had become too close to the European Union. Housden said in 2021 that 'The EU should remain our biggest trading partner, but Britain can be great on it's own without interference from brussels' Housden is Pro-choice, Pro-abortion, pro Brexit, he is against lowering the voting age to 16 and has spoken about his desire for tighter and more stringent borders and a decline in both legal and illegal immigration numbers.

Housden believes district planning authorities are no longer fit for purpose, and is supportive of unitary authorities pointing to the fact that house building and infrastructure should be done simultaneously. Housden was highly critical of Stroud District in August 2023 when he described them publicly as "Shambolic and not fit for purpose' Housden was reprimanded for this comment, and asked to attend mandatory training with the monitoring officer. Housden is supportive of same sex ceremonies, but does not believe they should be held in church. Housden is a member of the Conservative Party joining in 2015.
