Kylie Lorena Cantrall[3] (born June 25, 2005[3][4]) is an American actress, singer, songwriter and social media personality.[5]

Among her acting career, she played the lead role as Gabby Duran in the television series Gabby Duran & the Unsittables (2019–2021),[4] a recurring role as Dani in the fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2023),[6][7] and the lead role as Red in the Descendants spin-off film Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024).[8][9] She also played a main voice role as Savannah in the animated film Ron's Gone Wrong (2021).[10]

As a singer, she has recorded several singles, with her first extended play being released in 2023.

Early life

Cantrall's father is a music producer while her mother is a dancer and choreographer.[11] She started learning how to dance at two years old while also going with her father to recording sessions.[12] She did a dance competition in Las Vegas when she was seven years old.[13] When she was eight years old, she watched the biopic Crazy Sexy Cool.[14] She started researching TLC and became obsessed with their music.[11]

Career

With her father's help, Cantrall then started a YouTube series “Hello Kylie”, where she reviewed Disney Channel shows.[14] She also started singing and performed on YouTube and music.ly.[13]

In 2016, Cantrall was signed to a talent management agency.[15] At the end of 2016, as Hello Kylie, she released her first single "Sleep Is 4 Suckas" alongside independent music label New Muzik Order, which was cofounded by her father.[16] She also made guest appearances on Bizaardvark and Raven's Home.[17]

At 13 years old, she was cast in the title of Gabby Duran & the Unsittables.[18] As a result, she left public school to focus on her career.[13] In 2019, Gabby Duran & the Unsittables premiered on Disney Channel;[19] she also performed the series' opening theme song, "I Do My Thing".[20] In 2021, Cantrall reprised her role as Gabby Duran in the second season of Gabby Duran & the Unsittables. The show would be cancelled in December of that year.[21] She also featured on R3hab single "Sad Boy" alongside Jonas Blue and Ava Max that year,[22][23] and starred in a voice role in Ron's Gone Wrong as Savannah.[24]

In 2022, she started a TikTok series called “10 Minute Songs”, where fans would send her three words and in 10 minutes, she would create a song using those three words. In September 2022, it was announced during the D23 Expo that Cantrall would be part of the main cast of the fourth installment in the Descendants film series, originally in the working title of Descendants 4, later being officially named Descendants: The Rise of Red, in the title role of Red, daughter of the Queen of Hearts.[25][26][8] In the same month, it was announced that she would become a recurring cast member in the fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.[27][28]

In August 2023, Cantrall became the ambassador of TruSkin cosmetics brand, being the brand's first ambassador.[1][2]

During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, she worked on her music, releasing her debut EP with songs based on the “10 Minute Songs” Tiktok series and a single, "Elastic". Her debut album is scheduled to release in 2024.[14][29]

Influences

Cantrall is influenced by 90s artists such as TLC, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Aaliyah.[14] She has also called Brandy, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé as well as Rosalía and Becky G her favorite artists.[13][30]

Personal life

Cantrall is half-Venezuelan on her mother's side.[30][31]

In February 2021, Rafterman Entertainment Media Inc. filed a lawsuit against Cantrall's father, Alexander Cantrall, and the company he formed on behalf of his daughter, Hello Kylie Entertainment Inc. The suit's allegations included breach of contract and fraud. They reached a settlement in July 2022.[15]
