Math rock

Hey what's up, that's cool that you know these bands personally. I live near Cleveland right in the middle of the "rust belt" where the math stuff really got going in the '90s. My favorite group is "Craw" and I feel ambivalent about less heavy/"cleaner" sounding groups (the way indie rock seems to be going) using the term but I guess the Craw/Dazzling Killmen/Keelhaul style is just a more metal-oriented style than the "cleaner" style. I used to go to a lot of shows up until they started drying up in the later '90s. My own group was called Pointless Orchestra. We have a website if you want to look for it. Some of the Pattern is Movement songs have these multi-guitar things that sound like Steve Reich "Electric Counterpoint" or King Crimson's "Beat," "Discipline," or "Three of a Perfect Pair" things...all in different meters doing DEE-doo-DEE-doo-DEE-doo-doo kind of things. This is a minimalist-influenced rock that other groups like Polyrock or Tirez Tirez, or even groups like Ned Rothenberg's Semantics have also done. Tortoise has also tried but to my mind they sound terribly self-conscious when playing in 7 or similar meters. Keelhaul or Craw have internalized this rhythmic complexity, so their music is more complex because the meters are constantly changing. What's up man. I ended up adding my own band to the list page, mainly to generate more discussion. It's important for people to talk about this kind of music, I think. If someone takes it down, I don't care though. My band is called Yukon (www.myspace.com/yukon), someone once described us as Captain Beefheart meets Nirvana, I don't know. I'm going to check out your band today. I personally share your sentiment on the "cleaner" groups. Although some of it is pretty cool like the last Don Cab album, Ilium and stuff. But Cleveland dude, that's pretty rad, I've always wanted to go there. My friends' band The New Flesh play there on a lot of their tours. Bubblemath/Yukon

If Yukon is math rock, it should be listed. There really aren't that many truly math rock bands, comparatively speaking. I listened to Bubblemath sound samples (check it out) and it's very unusual but highly complex contemporary classical/symphonic-influenced rock. Very carefully arranged.
