Managing a conflict of interest

Information icon Hello, Truhlar. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Donald Truhlar, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. WNYY98 (talk) 01:29, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some proposed changes

Somebody created a page about me. Some of the information is not quite correct, and it is very incomplete. I cannot edit it myself because that would be a conflict of interest.

I would propose the following changes if it were permitted.

1. In the first paragraph, I think that "working in computational quantum and theoretical chemistry, chemical physics" is not quite right (and has poor grammar as well). I propose replacing it by "whose research is mainly in the area of theoretical and computational physical chemistry and chemical physics, with emphasis on quantum mechanics and chemical dynamics."

2. In the next section, I believe that "and so on" is not needed (and is somewhat inelegant). Furthermore, I would change "density functional theory (where its main contributions are represented by the Minnesota Functionals) and so on." to "and density functional theory, including the Minnesota functionals."

3. The section "Awards and honors" is out of date (many recent awards are not included) and some of the dates are wrong for material that is included. Plus it includes service (editorial work) as well as awards and honors. A more correct version would be as follows:

Hi there. Hope you don't mind me answering here for greater visibility. Just as another editor has said below, an edit request needs to be posted on the article's talk page, as per Wikipedia:Edit_requests#Planning_a_request, giving an opportunity to involved editors to reach a consensus on whether or not a change should be implemented. After a consensus has been reached, or if there is no clear opposition to the change, the edit request template should be placed on the article's talk page, and an independent editor (such as myself) will review the proposed change, and decide whether or not it should be made. Request denied due to incorrect procedure (just post your proposal on the article's talk page and wait for editors to express their opinions, then post the template).
