History and Foundation

Barnshaws Group, a metal bending company, was founded in 1969 by Russ Barnshaw in Oldbury, near Birmingham. The company initially focused on producing duct rings and flanges for ventilation, air conditioning, and dust control.[1]

Russ Barnshaw

Russ Barnshaw's early success was driven by his resourcefulness, using gears from a vehicle breaker's yard to build initial machines. This facilitated rapid growth, and the company acquired additional machinery from a Scottish shipbuilding manufacturer.

During the 1970s, Barnshaws formed a significant partnership with Roundo, a Swedish manufacturer of rolling and bending machines, resulting in enhanced machinery capabilities. Despite the economic recession, Barnshaws expanded its offerings, solidifying its position as the UK’s largest metal bending enterprise. Continued Evolution Barnshaws' proficiency in rolling beams and columns on their major axis spurred innovative structural steelwork designs and significant growth, leading to the establishment of a factory in Scotland in 1993. Barnshaws achieved the largest cold bending capacity worldwide in 2003, and expanded into Europe with a new plant in Poland, reducing transportation costs for European customers. Robert Barnshaw now leads the company, upholding the core values of quality service.[2]

Sustainability

Barnshaws' quality management principles have been refined to the extent that scrap material production is negligible during manufacturing processes. Progressive enhancements to machinery and operational software have resulted in dramatic waste reductions, often exceeding 50%. This exemplifies adherence to the principles enshrined in Barnshaws' comprehensive sustainability charter, ensuring the deployment of ethical practices that far surpass government and regulatory guidelines.[3]
