In European and Assyrian usage, the name Toma is a version of Thomas, originating from Aramaic t’om’a, meaning twin.[1]

It is also a female name, derived from Tamar, a Hebrew Bible name. In particular, in Russian language it is a diminutive of the name Tamara.

In Japan, it is a male name which is unrelated with the Bible nor "Thomas." The meaning will vary by which kanji are used to write this name. There is also a Japanese surname name Tōma.
