Social background

It's my understanding that, in the United States before the Civil War, hospitals were pretty much where poor people went, especially to die; if you needed medical attention and had money, you received care at home. Thus, when the Civil War broke out, religious organizations provided much of the expertise for early army hospitals, as they had the experience in running hospitals (the Museum of Civil War Medicine, for example, has a considerable display on this theme).
