more spanish hypocisy

California stayed with the Union in the Civil War
During the Civil War of 1861-65, in California, there was a controversy over whether California should remain a state of the Union. Thomas Starr King was a leading spokesman for the Union side. California did remain a Union state. This helped the Union, and helped eventually with the 13th Amendment. An article about slavery and California ought to refer (at least briefly) to the controversy within California, over staying with the Union, and the outcome of that controversy. Legal Status of Slavery in California
The article currently states, "Some slaveowners simply refused to notify their slaves of the prohibition...," without explaining what prohibition is referenced. In fact, the article does little to describe any legal prohibition against slavery in California, beyond the state somehow being considered a free state (no description of how that terminology in reference to California came about or what it meant). The article does a poor job of doing more than pointing out instances of slavery in California, bringing into question why it would be considered a free state. Pooua (talk) 01:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
