Because his liberal politics had him "in Dutch" with people who couldn't carry his cigar, Robinson's memoirs dismissed his entire output of the first half of the 1950's in only 2 or 3 paragraphs; calling them potboilers he had to make to pay the bills(he was in the middle of a messy divorce).
But with 25 years experience behind him, I think HELL ON FRISCO BAY was the best gangster portrayal of his career. The older he got the meaner he got. Look for a scene where he calmly orders a double murder over the phone while standing next to a statue of St.Francis of Assisi.
Even "Little Caesar" never sunk that low. In the film, Robinson's wife is such a devout Catholic that EG calls her "that walking rosary" and makes some daring remarks in favor of athiesm.
