Two sentences out of one.
The opening paragraph has a sentence that needs breaking up. It reads as if a career that "spanned more than four decades" had the result of "making him a public intellectual." There have been plenty of writers with a career of that length who became neither public figures or showed themselves to be intellectuals. Hitchens was an intellectual and was recognized as a public one, but the passage of time isn't what did it.
