A rione (Italian: [riˈoːne]; pl.: rioni) is a territorial subdivision equivalent to an urban neighborhood. The term originated from the administrative divisions of Rome, and is derived from the Latin word regio (pl.: regiones), meaning "region". All currently extant rioni are located in Municipio I of Rome.[1] The term has been adopted as a synonym of quartiere in the Italian comuni.[1]
