The Huntington City Hall is the city municipal building of Huntington, West Virginia.
History
In 1817, when Huntington, West Virginia was founded, the city used a small-frame building built on the 800 block of 4th Avenue. A few years later, a larger red brick building was erected on the east side of 9th Street just north of 5th Avenue. The building housed the city offices, the fire department, the police department, and the city jail. When the county seat was moved from Barboursville to Huntington in 1887[2], the county government shared use of the city building until the construction of the Cabell County Courthouse was completed in 1901.[1]
In 1911, when Huntington’s city council decided to erect a new city hall, paying $46,000 for a piece of land on the northeast corner of 5th Avenue as the site. The city retained Verus T. Ritter to design the new municipal building.[3]
In 1915 the building was complete with a Neoclassical architecture design. It also includes a 2,500-seat auditorium known as the Foundry Theatre.[4]
