Synopsis

The book revolves around Merchant's devotion to music and his faith in God, which becomes a reality along with the "dramatic twists, turns, and tragic moments along the way."

In "The Rage of the Age," the Teenagers, along with the lead singer Frankie Lymon, were one of the first founding groups to begin "the youth movement in music" that they inspire contemporary artists in both pop and rock and roll.

The "dirty side" of the music industry signifies the events that can shock others, leading to warn anyone who will be entering the industry such as entertainment. Therefore, Merchant's story also aims to change for the better. He shares that "God has set him free from the pains of the past" without regret or shame.[3]

The book reveals the composition of the 1956 song "Why Do Fools Fall in Love." The title of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" (or "Why Do Birds Sing So Gay?") was influenced by the Penguins song "Earth Angel" at first glance, as well as "Am I Fooling Myself Again."[4]

Originally, the song was played in a 1-6-2-5 chord progression, often used in all 1950s doo-wop and rhythm and blues slow hit songs. Later, it was upgraded to an up-tempo song, along with "ooh-wahs" after Sherman Garnes's bass opening line and the saxophone solo played by Jimmy Wright. This song was made short in duration however. Apart from the duration, the hook was suggested by George Goldner to "make a song a hit record," which garnered attention later on. During the final sequence of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," Al Weintraub established a name for the group, "The Teenagers."[5][6]
