We will need to add this for the still image. Not sure the best way to do so. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:42, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Issues with Way 2
Great project, it would add a lot to Wikipedia and it's nice to see the progress with this! Where should I point out issues with Way 2?
I think having a static image at first page load with some button to view the interactive version would be the best approach (seems like that's "Way 2" here) as it would load quickest and also display something right away even if not signed in and/or having given permission and also works for those who simply prefer to not see the interactive versions or give permission. The problems are that:
- the play button is broken (it doesn't display the play icon in the middle in Firefox but it the lower half of the circle)
- the play button should load by default without having to give ublock permission to any external site
- when clicking the play button it opens the datagraphic in fullsize (the full window) instead of as an element in the article like for "Way 1" – I think it should replace the static image at the place where the image is at in the article just like "Way 1" except maybe on mobile where it could be great to have it show it in fullscreen by default (and also rotate it / the screen)
- es:Template:OWID is linked underneath it but it seems to just be the static image, not "Way 2"

- User:Prototyperspective way 2 exists on MDWiki and EU WP. The WMF is not happy with it though and it has thus been rolled back on ES WP.
- Yah the play button is a little off center in Firefox. It works for me though...
- The play button does load by default on MDWiki and EU WP. Permission is requested when you hit the button.
- The WMF is not permitting it loading in a full window or the article itself like way 1.
- Currently we are working on Way 5 and 6.

- Do you have a link with the WMF feedback / explanation why it has been rolled back? The play button is very off for me, I could put a screenshot somewhere but that should be fixed before rollout, you could simply use a play icon instead of this thing in a circle. I meant that it doesn't load with the default uBlock settings for Wikipedia but one needs to first unblock more domains. I don't know what you mean with in a full window: that's what it currently does and I asked for it to be loaded as embedded element in the page like with Way 1.
- Way 5 does not have a description but if it's just displaying images it loses all the benefits of the interactive element like being able to hover over a country or line point to see the numbers. Way 6 is a separate window instead of the element within the article. --Prototyperspective (talk) 16:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- User:Prototyperspective [1] is feedback from the WMF. Yah we will eventually fix the cosmetic appearance of the play button.
- Per "I meant that it doesn't load with the default uBlock settings for Wikipedia but one needs to first unblock more domains." Sorry still not sure what this means.
- Yah we could technically have it become interactive like way 1, but the WMF is not going to permit that either.
- Still working on Way 5. Give us a few weeks. Still determining just how much we can do.
- Yes Way 6 is in a completely new tab. The WMF says this content is not allow to load in a url that states "wikipedia" due to readers possibly getting confused that this content is from Wikipedia and not from OWID. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:31, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
I am not sure this is allowed on Wikipedia. I think it needs to be labeled "External link". Or "External source link."
I see it for videos. See right sidebar box of video links:
Its caption is "External videos". All the videos are linked from the box.
See: w:Template:External media.
Whatever ways are allowed on Wikipedia, I think they should all link directly back to the OWID source from the Wikipedia caption. Marked "External". --Timeshifter (talk) 15:51, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
