Breast examination is a physical examination performed by a medical professional on an individual presenting with signs and symptoms in a breast,[1][2]

periodically on some people with a family history of breast disease,[1][2]

or on a person with an incidental abnormal finding on imaging such as mammography.[1][2]

Consent

Techniques may vary from one medical professional to another, but essentially follow the principles of obtaining informed consent, offering a chaperone,[3][4]

followed by looking for nearby lymph nodes, in the underarms,[3][5]

Findings1

Examination findings are generally reported using particular terms; location, size, symmetry, texture, description of any mass and appearance of the skin.[3]

For example, there may be overlying skin changes and altered appearance of the nipple in breast cancer.[3]

Milky liquid may be seen in a breastfeeding mother.[3]

Or an eczema like redness may be seen around the nipple in Paget's disease of the nipple.[6]
