Hello MusikAnimal,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Hello Chasebalo! You will want to submit your article for review. I have moved it to Draft:Obi Peter Adigwe (the draft namespace is where we normally put draft articles). I see a lot of issues with this page, mostly formatting and lack of links to other articles. You may also need to work on removing promotional wording, as it almost reads like a resumé. Help:Your first article offers some helpful tips. I've also left a welcome template on your talk page that might further assist you. Whenever you think your draft is ready for review, just click on the blue "Submit your draft for review!" button, then hit "Publish changes". No expert but looks like it will need some changes over [1] ( delivery of t/p message is currently set as conditional, subject to a note) and accordingly, here.

FWIW I see that the ability to add a personal note (while tagging an article) was committed on 8 August, 2012 by Benny Situ.
I note that Steven had created both the templates at Template:Taggednonote-NPF and Template:Taggednote-NPF, a day before but the former won't get integrated to PageTriage, ever. Probably an omission? ∯WBGconverse 11:54, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

  • The URL of the Wikimedia wiki main pages could be changed. This is because the current URLs cause several problems. For example https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page would be https://www.wikidata.org/ instead. You can tell the developers if this would cause problems for your wiki.
  • There is a new technical community newsletter. You can read more about the work of Wikimedia's technical community. Subscribe to get the information in the future.
  • Advanced item Outreachy is an internship program for groups who are underrepresented in free and open-source software. There are seven Wikimedia projects about coding, documentation and quality assurance in the next round. Persons who fit the criteria can apply. The last day to apply is 5 November.

Failed Geonotice

@Redrose64: Looks like a bug in the messaging! The "error log" link was pointing to User:MusikBot/PermClerk/Error log when it should be User:MusikBot II/GeonoticeSync/Error log. Gadgets with imports

Was looking through some of these today, we have multiple gadgets with imports. Some are x-wiki imports that haven't been touched at their "source" in years, some are actually to userland. Thinking about at LEAST putting some sort of user-land-imported-warning notice on the gadgets descriptions... — xaosflux Talk 20:41, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: A warning seems good, but we really should copy them over to the MW namespace, either here or on the foreign wiki. It sounds like a full audit is in order. I don't think we need approval from the maintainers (though of course let them know afterwards). Gadgets should never originate in the userland, period. If the maintainer is an int-admin (on any wiki), the issue is not as pressing, but I'd like to go ahead and migrate some, e.g. this one, barring objections? — MusikAnimal talk 21:03, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

  • Internet Explorer 6 and 7 are no longer supported. This means the browsers might start looking a bit weird. They will not get security support. You can't read Wikimedia wikis in Internet Explorer on Windows XP or Windows versions that are older than Windows XP. This is because almost no one uses the browsers anymore. Supporting them made the wikis less secure for everyone else. [7]
  • In the future section headings might have a share link. This is to make it easier to link to the section. You can read more and discuss.

PERM

You probably aren't aware just how useful your bot(s) and scripts actually are to those of us admins who regularly work the PERM requests. As one of the long-term regulars at PERM, I can't imagine being without them today. I just have one request at this stage: Would it be possible to also automate the 'not done' response to send a message to the applicant containing the rationale for non-approval? I'm thinking in terms of the window that is already used for the 'accorded' feature. Such a message could be something like: "Thank you for applying for the 'xxxx' user right. I'm sorry to inform you that the right has not been accorded at this time because [admin comment to be inserted here]. However, do keep up the good work and don't hesitate to apply again when the reasons have been addressed". Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:10, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words! I like this idea! There currently isn't a "decline" popup, like you see with "assign permissions". We'd need to add a new link. I also think sending a message to the applicant should be optional. This is all perfectly doable, but it will require time I don't have at the moment. I'll put it on the list of to-dos. Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.

Hey there, I just got a friendly note from you explaining that you had reverted one of my recent contributions "because it did not appear constructive." I appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me, because I would otherwise have certainly changed it back again, and think myself virtuous for doing so.

In fact, I'm fairly sure I WAS being constructive. The edit in question is to the subhead title in the article about North Dakota GOP Senator Kevin Kramer. The subhead is clearly about the senator's (fawning) relationship with Donald Trump. A vandal changed the subhead to title to read "Donald Duck" instead of "Donald Trump" as a joke. Now, I actually think that's a pretty solid joke, and I would normally have chuckled and left it alone. But I decided uncharacteristically to take a moment to fix the title to what it obviously should read: "Donald Trump," the real-life president, who is more likely to feature in a US senator's biography than a fictional cartoon duck.

I say all this because I assume you are an editor in good faith, and not a funny jokester, who probably assumed that I was playing around with a controversial political figure's wikipedia page for lolz. So I thought you ought to know that somebody did do exactly that, but it wasn't me, and you've put it back to the joke version. Thanks, and have a good day!

The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as internal. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [8]

Problems

  • There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [9]
  • The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [10]

Please adjust the page protection settings on the following pages. As discussed at there is clear community consensus that ECP should not apply for "high risk templates" and nothing under WP:ECP supports such protection to this/these template(s) (example: "by request" is insufficient).

@Buffs: Thanks for making this list! To be clear, we were experiencing continued template vandalism from both unconfirmed and confirmed accounts, so this was a sort of IAR thing (you'll notice I was actually in the oppose column in that RfC :). The problem is the vandal(s) were running queries to find these templates, rather than doing random drive-by vandalism, so preemptive protection made sense. I believe the RfC predated this wave of vandalism. I posted what I did to Special:Permalink/885696008#Scan/check for unprotected high risk modules? to no opposition. See also the bot proposal where some folks did raise concerns about using ECP, and the bot is not using it. The thought is that RfC is a bit out of date, but I didn't (and still don't) have the time and energy to start another RfC. I don't recall ever protecting templates "by request", unless that was one of my fellow admins asking me to do another semi-automated run (we've done several over the years). Anyway, I have adjusted the protection levels for these templates. Some I moved to template-protection now that they have more transclusions, the rest were lowered to semi, consistent with the bot behaviour.   • You can share feedback and ideas on the Desktop Improvements project. The goal is to make the interface easier to use for readers and editors without removing any functionality. The Foundation's Readers Web team will work on this over the next two years.

I see you archived this before I saw your reply. Thanks for looking into it. I realise you are busy - any idea of a time frame? It could give the admin the dropdown choice of:

  1. Decline (just adds the {{not done}} template, signature, and 'not done' as the ES).
  2. Decline & notify user (like the current 'assign' form)

Tough to say when I could get around to it. Right now I'm finishing up the new version of m:MoreMenu, then I'm going to revive toolforge:mediaviews. Of course, if any other techies following this discussion want to help with userRightsManager, I'd more than appreciate it! I do think it is a good idea. Instead of a dropdown I might suggest having two links: "assign permissions" and "decline", the latter will open up the decline popup where you can optionally add a message to the user's talk page. You'd also get a dropdown of what decline template you want to use, pulling in the options from User:MusikAnimal/responseHelper. — MusikAnimal talk 18:20, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Sure, see User:SD0001/userRightsManager.js. This was quickly hacked together in 30-40 minutes. I've not attempted to do a dropdown for decline template options - though might consider it over the weekend. The assign permissions code is untouched, so should work as before; the decline code is largely duplicated from that - I've tested it and it works, though not exhaustively. Also, it's worth looking into putting in a textarea field rather than the constrained single-line text field, into which I dunno how admins write large rationales.
Kudpung, for the user talk page notifications to work, you'll need to create the templates first, because decline notification templates don't exist. If you use this script and encounter any issues, do let me know. SD0001 (talk) 14:01, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
This is amazing, thank you SD0001! I did not fully test this, and I see some display issues, but we can iron those out. Indeed we will need a user talk template for this. Once that's created, I'll help test your version and merge into mine, and I'll also be sure to add you as a co-author at User:MusikAnimal/userRightsManager :) As for the decline template dropdown, I was going to have it pull from User:MusikAnimal/responseHelper (since it is widely used and well-maintained), but currently the list there isn't publicly exposed. I can take care of that, but also userRightsManager will need to prompt for additional input based on the type of template. For instance {{RFPR}} takes a parameter for the exp decline, noting the number of mainspace edits the user has made (the PERM bot will report this, so admins usually just copy/paste). SD0001, this sounds excellent . How can I test it without copying 503 lines of code to my user js page? It is designed so that only admins can use it? (needs to be). Can it be used without each admin needing to put it individually into their js page? I will gladly write the texts for the canned rejection reasons (they don't need to be more than a few words each) and the text wrapper for the rejection message template. Kudpung, to use it, simply add importScript('User:SD0001/userRightsManager.js'); to your common.js page. If/when you've created the templates (you can use the permission granted templates as a reference for structure), tell me so that I or MA can insert them into the code. SD0001, I was impatient to see what you have done so I already pasted the 500 lines of code, but I'll change that again when I get a moment. Actually, I think I was being a bit too ambitious with the drop down idea and I think we can dispense with canned reasons, leaving the admin free to add his/her own comments. Probably all we need is the template message. Here is the wording:

Logging ECP pages

Hey MusikAnimal, I was looking through the logs of all ECP pages. I'm not seeing that the logs have been updated for the pages you put under ECP. Am I missing something? Shouldn't they be logged?

In the big picture of things, I know this is a highly manual and unnecessarily tedious process I wish could be MUCH more automated. Until that happens, I think we still need to do this. If you could please add yours to the relevant year's/years' log, it would be appreciated. Buffs (talk) 15:43, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Yes, a very tedious task that I'm afraid I don't have time for right now. If I remember correctly, I did not put these pages under discretionary sanctions, rather I helped with the technical means to enforce them. Originally semi is all we had, then the edit filter was used, and once extended-confirmed protection was implemented I helped apply it to the existing pages. E.g. [16][17][18]. There might be a few in there I was solely responsible for, but I'd be surprised because arbitration enforcement and imposing discretionary sanctions, etc., is not my expertise. — MusikAnimal talk 16:42, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

I do not see this as a urgent matter at all. If I forgot to log something 3.5 years ago, I apologize, but I don't see an overwhelming need to drop everything I'm doing to rectify it. Besides, as I said, I don't immediately see any pages that I myself put under arbitration enforcement. I left one example above. I checked a few others, such as Bhumihar, and while I did add the extended-confirmed protection, this as I recall was purely me providing technical assistance. The sanctioning was done by others [19]. Arbitration enforcement is very much out of character for me, and I'd rather disengage if at all possible. Technical matters meanwhile are within my expertise, and I suspect (or at least hope) my involvement with arbitration enforcement did not extend beyond that. You are not in the wrong for bringing this issue to my attention, but I'd appreciate your patience and sympathy that the tedious work of retroactive logging is of questionable cost/benefit at this stage. That said I do accept responsibility should I have myself imposed any sort of sanctioning, but I have yet to find examples. If you do, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could point them out. Buffs, it came across to me as a mild reproach. Bear in mind that MusikAnimal has only been around since 2011 but already has 122,179 edits - compare. That said, ECP is an important and very useful level of protection, but due to all the unnecessary kerfuffle around it, I and many other admins never use it. It is a mild reproach. Admins are expected to follow the policies of WP and this is an instance where an admin has not done so. I asked for it to be followed and, rather than say "Ah, you have a point. I'll get that taken care of within a few days/weeks", the response was (effectively), "I'm not interested in doing that, so I'm not going to". IMNSHO...wrong response...
Additionally, re:...due to all the unnecessary kerfuffle around it, I and many other admins never use it, that "additional kerfuffle" is intentional and serves to dissuade flippant application of ECP. I thought I made it very clear I didn't impose the sanctions on these articles. I was asked to help with implementation, so I did. Respectfully, I feel like you're intentionally going around giving some of us a hard time, calling out well-meaning admins for trivial and/or very old actions that are largely non-issues. In particular, I found the questioning of my use of time to be offensive. Surely you agree this is not an urgent matter. If the logging means this much to you, why not be bold and update it yourself? I cannot provide anymore rational than what the protection log itself says, for one because it was so long ago, but also I don't think I applied the sanctions to begin with. If you wanted to take the wording so literally, allow me to quote All sanctions and page restrictions must be logged by the administrator who applied the sanction or page restriction. I did not do this, to my recollection. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The 30/500 restriction existed before the protections were applied, they just were manually enforced. Eventually we used the edit filter (which is where I came in), and once ECP was implemented I helped apply it to the already-sanctioned articles. I was trying to help my colleagues. If I knew I was going to be hounded about this years later, I wouldn't have done it. I am not trying to be stubborn, I just have yet to see why I am being singled out. I take it you are not a fan of ECP. You may be interested to know that at least in terms of preemptive protection, I'm not either (the templates were a different matter, as you already know). My bot populates User:MusikBot/ECPMonitor/Report, which is transcluded at WP:AN so people can monitor its usage. I doubt this changes your opinion of my actions, but I thought I'd share it anyway. First, I'm not singling you out. I've left messages on about a dozen other admin pages. I have not applied it is that I don't want to be accused of doing something that should be confined to Admins. Almost all of the other admins I've spoken to have said "Hey, you have a point  Done". I am perplexed as to why you don't think you were the one that applied ECP to the articles in question. It's right there in the logs.
Second, I concur it's not a pressing matter (in that there are not exigent circumstances), but it also needs to be done IAW WP:ECP and WP:ArbCom's ruling on the matter. I disagree that they are trivial or non-issues. If ArbCom states that they need to be done, then they need to be done when such restrictive access is applied.
Lastly, I'm sorry if you find this disrespectful. I'm coming to you first OUT of respect for both you and your position within WP. Buffs (talk) 03:07, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 820 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

NPP Backlog chart

Hey musik, sorry to bother you. Is there any chance of having an 'all time daily' option for the Wikipedia:New_pages_patrol/Backlog_chart? While the weekly data does suffice for the all-time chart, it doesn't quite reflect the day-to-day grind that NPP is, and I would prefer to have at least the option of having the daily data in an all time chart if it isn't too much trouble. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here)(click me!) 04:52, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

Weird filter bug

Would it be possible to restore the page Pokémon anime in India to my userspace at User:Suffusion of Yellow/Filter bug , if it's not a copvio/attack/etc. I simply can't figure out what's going on with filter log there. @Suffusion of Yellow: NonsensicalSystem's only successful edit added {{Db-empty}} to an empty page. Would restoring the page help with debugging, considering that wouldn't restore the missing info in AbuseLog? I can still do it, but we'd need to re-add create protection, and avoid inviting all those editors to your userspace (which they may find through their own Special:Contribs).

And, is it possible to tell if Special:AbuseLog/25413673 and Special:AbuseLog/25413674 had the same request ID? They have the same timestamp, but I want to be sure it's really the same edit attempt. I know request IDs are available at https://stream.wikimedia.org/v2/stream/recentchange, but of course I wasn't streaming at the time. Was it recorded somewhere else? @Suffusion of Yellow: I restored just the edits since the last deletion, which I think should suffice. The full history goes back 2 years across hundreds of edits, which is what I was avoiding. Ok, no need to check for the request IDs. Seems like 3 (hist · log) and 346 (hist · log) will both trip if old_size and new_size are 0. Except, null edits aren't supposed to trip the filter at all. So it's not as severe a bug as I thought, but still a bug. I'm going to be away for a few days, but will file a phab when I get back if it's not a duplicate. Thanks!   • The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [25]
  • Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [26]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 November. It will be on the other wikis next week (calendar). This is because of holidays.

High-use templates

Hello, would you be willing to semi-protect Template:IPA vowels/table, Template:IPA pulmonic consonants/table, Template:IPA non-pulmonic consonants/table, and Template:IPA co-articulated consonants/table? They are transcluded through their parent templates, which are semi-protected, and are used in hundreds of pages. I'm asking you since you have semi-protected related templates. Thanks. @Nardog: A bot now automatically protects highly-transcluded templates. I'd almost rather it handle this because it goes by a community-supported threshold of semi'ing after 500 transclusions. The parent templates were protected when we were actively experiencing targeted template vandalism, but thanks to the bot that has largely subsided and this preemptive work seems less critical. Is there other reason to believe these templates are high-risk? — MusikAnimal talk 01:56, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

A message from Ihuntrocks

There seems to be a circular issue with Jack Posobiec's page involving multiple users (some of whom have been rightly banned for disruptive editing). Per the talk page discussion, there are neutrality issues and WP:Coatrack issues. The circular issue arises when someone tries to change it to a version that fixes the coatrack issues and write it as if it's a biography of a living person. When this happens, the article is reverted to a version which is a coatrack with a lead that appears like a tabloid write-up. When that version reappears, it invariably becomes vandalized. Afterward, either a cleaner version that takes care of the coatrack and BLP issues is restored, or the older version with all of the issues is restored. You can see from the edit log that there is a lot of activity.

What would be the best way to move forward to avoid edit-warring, and to end up with a page which is written with NPOV and BLP policies in mind and is also not a coatrack? I don't want to simply revert it to a functional version such as this one only to have it end up in its current state again minutes later. I thought I'd ask you since you've made edits recently and have been here a while and have made substantial contributions to Wikipedia. I always prefer to defer to those more experienced than I when facing a problem I can't resolve alone. Than you very much for your time. Ihuntrocks (talk) 16:43, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

@Ihuntrocks: Hello! If other patrollers reverted to a non-stable version, it was probably by mistake. Any BLP issues should be addressed without hesitation. Disputed content changes should be made following consensus on the talk page. When in doubt, refer to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. If edit warring ensues, we can use page protection or report users to the edit warring noticeboard, but I suspect the semi-protection that was added today will guard against most disruption. Thank you for your response. The semi-protection has been applied to preserve the current coatrack/tabloid version, and the talk page is an exercise in status quo stonewalling. @Ihuntrocks: You can also raise this issue at the BLP noticeboard to get broader input. If the article is in bad shape, you are not wrong to make fixes or seek assistance, barring edit wars and going against consensus. I'm afraid I don't have time to delve into it. My involvement was solely in patrolling recent changes. The admin who protected the page was surely uninvolved as well, and probably didn't painstakingly seek the correct version. I suppose I could take it back to the BLP noticeboard. The last time I did that the discussion there was closed by an admin who later became involved and had to remove themself, and the discussion has since been archived. The last time I tried to participate on the talk page, I was accused of being a sock puppet and the aforementioned admin suggested, rather strongly, that I leave the discussion. The page was put under admin-only lock for a while and at that point, it was status-quo stonewalled, despite numerous issues being raised on the talk page by others in addition to myself. I honestly believe there is no way that article will be allowed to improve, but I may give the BLP board another shot. Ihuntrocks (talk) 03:08, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

MoreMenu suppression log

Hi MusikAnimal. For MoreMenu, I was wondering if it would be possible to include Special:Log/suppress (Suppression log) in the "User" → "User logs..." menu of MoreMenu in the event that the user in question is an oversighter and the user using MoreMenu is also an oversighter (similar to how it works for CheckUser). I sometimes like to look over my suppression log to make sure I didn't miss anything, and sometimes it could be helpful to look at other oversighters' logs, e.g. if they need a second opinion. If this is a nontrivial task, no worries at all—in any case, I also wanted to thank you for writing such a useful tool. Mz7 (talk) 08:33, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: There was a problem with archiving nominations at WP:TAFINOM, which I've just fixed. See Special:Diff/927468978. Basically the bot isn't that bright at parsing template syntax, so you must follow the instructions exactly, with the |article= parameter coming before |class=. I could fix the bot, but I hope I don't need to! Also pinging JJMC89 who asked about this almost 3 months ago. Sorry for taking so long to look into it!

That said, I don't see any issue with the Schedule page. Could you elaborate? — MusikAnimal talk 18:30, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Apparently incorrect blocking of a user (from DemonDays64)

You recently blocked the user THE WICKIPEDIA COMMUNITY IS EXPECTED THAT CREDINKIYA IS HERE AND THEYRE NOT SOCKPUPS! for being a "Vandalism-only account". However, looking at their few contributions, they only seem to be positive, anti-vandalism edits. In one case, they reverted vandalism/bad good-faith editing, but you reverted it back.

Why was this user banned? Was this mistaken?

BTW, on an unrelated note: I noticed that, at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/AutoWikiBrowser#DemonDays64, your bot posted a note saying "already done" to my request to get bot power for my bot; I know that your bot doesn't have a way to distinguish between that and requests for general AWB permissions, but I think it may be something good to take up with whoever manages the approval system for AWB. Somewhat of a heads up... I've been working on moving the AWB checkpage format to JSON (I think I wrote most of the code quite a while ago now), and it mostly works Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON, but isn't in use by AWB just yet...

At some point, are you able to update MusikBot II to work with that page instead? I suspect... It'll make your code quite a bit simpler, not having to parse out javascript, instead just reading/writing JSON...

@Reedy: Yes indeed! I think JSON makes much more sense, and the bot can easily accommodate. I'll need a bit of a heads up, though. I will be on wikibreak from December 24 through January 10 and won't be able to help during this time. The bot runs just once a week, so I'll also need a Sunday to make sure it works on its own. @Barkeep49: It would be a bit of work to adapt to that page, and not within the PERM ecosystem. If you just need archiving, I recommend ClueBot III. I doubt you'll regularly get that many requests after the initial flood, so something like this might be suitable:

  • The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [33]
  • Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [34]

  • You can get email notifications. You can get them immediately, a summary every day or a summary once every week. If you choose a summary you can soon choose not to get notifications you have already marked as read on the wiki. [35]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 December. It will be on all wikis from 19 December (calendar).

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

I find some days where views top 100,000. I am curious to see what made this high number. I check several dates, eg 15/02/2019 here> https://tools.wmflabs.org/topviews/?project=sw.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&date=2019-02-15&excludes=.

@Kipala: See https://tools.wmflabs.org/siteviews/faq/#anomaly. It looks like the spike is only for desktop and not mobile. Depending on what is normal for your wiki, this might suggest bot-inflated pageviews (I suppose on random articles, rather than just one). Right now this is an unfortunately common issue, but as I understand it the Analytics team is close to figuring out a long-term solution.   • You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [39]
  • Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [40]

Changes later this week

  • Advanced item Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [41]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 January. It will be on all wikis from 16 January (calendar).

  • Deepcat and Catgraph will stop working. This will happen at the end of January. This is because you can now use the normal search function instead. [42]
  • You can use <ref follow="…"> to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [43]

"RangeContribs" for talk pages

I'm curious if there is a tool or if (volunteer) you might be interested in it: some sort of way to see/query a specific IPv6 /64 range (or arbitrary, or IPv4, or...) to see what contributions have been made to user talk pages, so that I can search for previous warnings. The case is mostly motivated by a /64 lookup. Thoughts? --Izno (talk) 15:28, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

There isn't a simple way to query for revisions to talk pages of IPs within a range, unfortunately. The only IP range-friendly thing we have is for revisions made by those IPs, which are stored in the ip_changes table. See phab:T146628 in regards to the block log stuff.

That said, you could conceivably make a tool that does prefix searches (e.g. talk pages like 192.168.1.*), which might be better than nothing. — MusikAnimal talk 17:22, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

@Izno: If you just want page titles, then I guess Special:PrefixIndex would do? I don't know how Twinkle or MoreMenu would know what prefix to use, though. It would depend on how big of a range you're trying to view. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for the Met 'Understanding America' Edit-a-thon @ Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side.

Together, we'll expand Wikipedia articles on American history and art, and the understanding that all communities bring to American culture, as reflected in the Met collection up until ca. 1900.

With refreshments, and there will be a wiki-cake!

Open to everyone at all levels of experience, wiki instructional workshop and one-on-one support will be provided.

12:30pm - 4:30 pm at Uris Center for Education, Metropolitan Museum of Art (81st Street entrance) at 1000 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan
(note this is just south of the main entrance)
Galleries will be open this evening until 9 pm, and some wiki-visitors may wish to take this opportunity to see exhibits together after the formal event.

Farrand - links to this page

I understand you are working on a fix for this problem of wrong links to this page. It shows presently 17 links to the article I created, however it actually lists them as a Farrand disambiguation page of 4 items. userRightsManager - redirect autopatrol

Hi. Can I suggest an addition to User:MusikAnimal/userRightsManager.js relating to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist? Once a user is autopatrolled, they no longer need to be listed, and the script can automatically remove the user. Example (untested) code below.   • There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

Future changes

  • There is JavaScript code on Special:Undelete for administrators that makes it possible to automatically select multiple checkboxes by holding the "Shift" key and clicking. This code is also loaded by accident on other special pages and on articles. This makes pages slower to load. This will be fixed. If you know of other special pages where this is useful please tell the developers at phab:T232688.

@Aram: While it works, that extension is basically a hack. There are an infinite number of cases where certain things are shown as "dark" when they shouldn't, and vice versa. This is due to unpredictability of wikitext and how communities prefer to style page elements. After some time, it was decided that we shouldn't deploy this as it is currently implemented. As I understand it, the design team is working on a more robust, long-term solution. I'm not certain about details. Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [50]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Change to Template:User chess title fix

1000 filters ought to be enough for anyone

Hello, MA. I think MusikBot is undercounting active filters. User:MusikBot/FilterMonitor/Count says there are 198 active filters, but (await $.get("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=abusefilters&abfshow=enabled&abflimit=500&format=json")).query.abusefilters.length says there are 224. Changes from filters >= 1000 aren't being reported. Perhaps there's a hard-coded limit somewhere? Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 20:32, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Fixed! Indeed, it was only fetching up to 1000 filters from the API. I suppose this means the monitoring of filter changes was only happening to the first 1000, too... A major bug! Thanks for discovering this!   • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Problems

  • Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [56]

Changes later this week

  • If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [57]
  • When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [58]
  • On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [59]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).

Future changes

  • The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [60]
  • There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
  • Advanced item wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [61]

@Aram: What kind of pages are you trying to archive? The standard archiving bot for discussions is mw:Manual:Pywikibot/archivebot.py. You could try reaching out to the operator of one of the many bots that use this library, such as Whym who operates meta:User:ArchiverBot. Or if you have someone decent at Python they could set up their own bot. MusikBot does more specialized archiving such as at WP:PERM at WP:TAFINOM and can't be used for general purpose. It will soon be active by default on the German, Arabic, and Farsi Wikipedias. It will be on by default on more wikis within the next months. You will be able to opt out of the new interface.   • Some development will be slower than planned. This is because of the current pandemic. You can see the new deployment guidelines. This is to avoid risks when some persons could be unavailable.
  • There was a problem when adding interwiki links. The tool you use to add interwiki links could suggest the wrong project to link to. This has now been fixed. [69][70]

Can you undo a mistake by MusikBot II?

Actually, it was my mistake that was compounded by MusikBot II. In {{Commons and category}}, I mistakenly invoked Module:Commons link/sandbox instead of Module:Commons link. I corrected this mistake, but in the meanwhile, MusikBot II indefinitely protected Module:Commons link/sandbox, allowing only confirmed users. Sandboxes should be editable by everyone, right?

@Flix11: Perhaps I'm missing something, but in my opinion these don't quite meet the criteria for redaction. I suppose RD3 could apply, marginally. Frankly these types of juvenile verbal attacks are something to expect when fighting vandalism. I would take them with a grain of salt, and just revert and ignore, reporting to AIV as necessary. I certainly have been on the receiving end of much worse! It goes in one ear and out the other. If you still feel the edits should be redacted, you can ask another admin, or on IRC at #wikipedia-en-revdel connect (which is usually quicker). @MusikAnimal: I only noticed it because it appeared as import/upload on my global watchlist and I knew you didn't have the local rights - were any errors visible to anyone? If no one noticed before it was over, then that may not be warranted, but lets wait and see if anyone starts to complain (then again, Wikipedia:Global rights policy#Stewards says Stewards should not use their global rights to perform tasks that could be performed by local users and the imports and associated chaos could have been done by one of our two local importers; per Wikipedia:Global rights policy#Removal of rights - A user who abuses their global rights by knowingly or recklessly using their global rights on the English Wikipedia in contravention of this policy should be reported to meta:Stewards' noticeboard or #wikimedia-stewards immediately, where the stewards will determine whether an emergency removal of tools is required. - lets see if anyone calls for emergency destewardship before deciding. Using steward access?

Hi. I saw you just import uploaded a number of revisions (that appear to have been originally from enwiki???). From what I can see, you were only able to do that because of your global rights as a steward - is this use of steward rights allowed? Just wondering --DannyS712 (talk) 06:18, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

This has been a grave mistake... :( I was setting up a new wiki, had Special:Import on it and Special:Export on enwiki. At some point the two got mixed... trying to fix what I broke (doesn't seem like much?). Account is not compromised! Sorry. — MusikAnimal talk 06:20, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Not broken from what I can tell, but it makes the page history really confusing to look at. Ideally, I would suggest deletion and selective undeletion, but since a lot of the templates are very highly used would it be possible to rev-del the entire revision (text/user/comment) to that it isn't confusing to others? @Andrybak and DannyS712: Okay does all look okay to you now? I didn't notice any visual problems, but there were some changes that seemed large! The biggest problem here I think is how highly transcluded these templates were... probably putting a strain on the job queue right now :( This was incidental because, of course, the one template you want to import is the one that uses a bajillion templates that need to be imported, too. I hope the effects weren't any more far-reaching that what I noticed, which was nothing. I'm very sorry for this mistake; I'm sure others will be by soon to trout me! @MusikAnimal: maybe MediaWiki:importtext should have a LARGE WARNING that stewards may be using it accidentally? Is there a way to find weekly results rather than daily or monthly results? If so, that would make life so much easier when trying to gather data for Top 25 Reports as I wouldn't need to bother more experienced Top 25 authors to help

Now, after reading a bit of your user page (I hope that doesn't make me seem like a stalker), I see you're from NYC--well, that's fantastic because Andrew Cuomo showed up on last week's Top 25 😂

@Rebestalic: No weekly granularity as of right now, see phab:T133575. I believe Jtmorgan is working on reviving the old WP:5000 weekly report (except limited to 1,000 results), so perhaps we'll soon have a interim solution.

This daily report that calculates the cumulative weekly pageviews for all articles that appeared among the top 1000 most-viewed articles on any day within the past week. It is intended as a replacement for the Top 5000 report, which is down as of April 1 2020. It will update daily at around 15:00 UTC. This report makes a few assumptions that vastly simplify the process of calculating weekly views. As a result, it may miss a few articles that never quite made it into a daily top 1000 list, but nevertheless had a consistently high-ish volume of views over a 7 day period. However, this limitation will probably only impact the 'tail' of the report; you can trust that the ranking and the total weekly counts for the vast majority of the articles listed in the report are representative. Question about MusikBot & permissions

Hello, MusikAnimal,

I have a question for you about MusikBot. I know there is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Approved/March 2020 for a record of editors who have received permissions they have requested. Is there a similar list for editors whose requests have been denied? I know that if an editor has requested rights repeatedly, MusikBot posts that fact but I can't find a location where it would get the information, I can't find any archived requests that have been denied or any lists that keep track of this. @Arjayay: The article is only under move protection. I think {{pp-protected}} by itself suggests edit protection, so you'd need to add |action=move if you wanted the correct icon, or just use {{pp-move}}. — MusikAnimal talk 19:08, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

You can rename them before this if you wish and the new title can be different from the one the script would rename it to. [76]

New NodeJS bot framework

Mostly written on the MWBot as a foundation with some enhancements copied from mw.Api, added some original improvements like automated retry on maxlag and expired token errors, and finally bundled in my own libApi.js functions. A message from Polla ta deina

Dear MusikAnimal,

I saw your name in the list of Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles. Both your Wikipedia name and your user page suggest that you will be open to my request to view a deleted article on a musician. The subject of the article was Menno van Delft and his name was also the title of the article.

I understand you need a reason for my request. Basically it is that I am astounded that the article has disappeared and that I can see no reason for this disappearance. The Dutch, German, Polish and Russian articles on him seem perfectly fine to me and they are still there. My personal interest, apart from the fact that I am a music buff, is that I am the author of the picture that was used in the article (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Menno_van_Delft_2019.jpg) (it also is used in the Dutch and Polish articles) and that I hate to see my work disappear without knowing the reason why.

  • There was a problem with the Wikidata database last week. Some wikis went down for twenty minutes. Wikidata and other projects showed error messages. Interwiki links were not shown, some tools did not work and other problems. Some of this was fixed quickly. The developers are working on fixing the rest. [81][82][83]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from April 14. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from April 15. It will be on all wikis from April 16 (calendar).

Future changes

  • Some graphs have not worked on mobile. This will soon be fixed. [84]
  • The article tab on talk pages of redirects links to the target of the redirect. It could link to the redirect page itself instead. You can leave feedback on this.
  • For pages using syntax highlighting, the use of the deprecated <source> tag, as well as the use of the deprecated enclose parameter, will add tracking categories.

This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

Reply tool improved with edit tool buttons
In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

  • On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
  • The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
    • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
    • a rich-text visual editing option, and
    • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

Help with edit filters

Hello, MusikAnimal! :)

Can you help me a bit with some filters? I'm an interface and normal admin at SqQuote and SqWiki and I'm trying to adjust some of EnWiki filters for our projects but I'm not that good with the regex syntax. I needed to get 5 filters in total and Xaosflux already helped me out with 1 of them. You can see our discussion here to learn more if you're interested. I need help with Abuse Filter #29 - New user removing speedy deletion templates, to make it work with our SD templates. Change the user_editcount as desired. Note also this doesn't allow for users to remove self-requested deletions. Here we have a dedicated template for that, and we allow that one to be removed. @Klein Muçi: Sure, just change page_namespace = 0 to equals_to_any(page_namespace, 0, 4, 5) (adding whatever namespace IDs). Or just remove that line entirely if you want it to apply to all namespaces. mw:Extension:AbuseFilter/Rules format documents the syntax and available variables in AbuseFilter, if that helps. Actually, now that I see it better... How does AF/231 change from AF/135 - Repeating characters? I think I should get only 1 of them. Which one would be better for catching vandal actions with random words like asdjglksdfj/lsadijer,noiveiz.nvxc? Also, do you need our Albanian terms for "file" and "image" or are they not needed?

@Klein Muçi: Sorry for the late reply. I would imagine Special:AbuseFilter/135 is going to catch more vandalism, but mind you this filter was designed for editors with an English QWERTY keyboard. If your keyboard includes accented characters (without hitting shift or anything like that), the filter might need to be tweaked a bit. There's no harm in copying it over to your wiki and keeping it in log-only for a while, just to make sure there are no conflicts in Albanian. — MusikAnimal talk 00:49, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
No worry. :) I mean, our language does include 2 characters like that: ç/Ç and ë/Ë but we all use QWERTY keyboards usually and have to do those symbols with Alt combinations. Usually. Okay then. Can you explain to me what are its limits? What it can and can't do? I only ask so I know what to write at its description. If my question isn't clear enough, let me give you an example. This is what's written in the description of the anti-shouting AF/50: The filter blocks edits that contain only large print letters from new or unregistered users. The filter becomes active in the 13th uppercase letter and allows the use of magic words and other similar commands that use capitalized words for useful purposes. - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:23, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi: I didn't write filter 135, but I understanding is that it's basically looking for long strings that contain no vowels. In English it's rare for any word to not have a vowel. So for instance the filter would catch random typing on the middle row of the keyboard (keys ASDFGHJKL). It also attempts to exempt characters that are part of a URL, since URLs may contain random characters. Hopefully that answers your question. — MusikAnimal talk 20:51, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Also, I'm taking the liberty to ask for the final filter I need help with so you can answer for both inquiries when you do have time. :) I need one filter to fight profanities. Filters are the best way to do this, no? I'd like it if we had a Mediawiki page we can add text to and it would automatically block that text used anywhere on the project. I'm 80% sure a page like that doesn't exist so filters it is. :P You have a lot of filters against this kind of vandalism. What do you suggest me to get? Special:AbuseFilter/384 is a good example of disallowing "bad" words. Just replace line 7 (bad_word := ...) with a list of profane Albanian words, separated by pipe characters. So bad_word := "foo|bar|baz"; would disallow the addition of the words "foo", "bar" and "baz" (case insensitive). Keep in mind these could be part of a larger, constructive word. You can get around this by using the \b word boundary token. So let's assume "foo" is a bad word, but "food" is a good word. Your regex should look like "foo\b|bar|baz", such that "foo" doesn't match "food". Hope this makes sense, — MusikAnimal talk 20:51, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you again for both of your answers! :) I was able to set up the filter. Can you give it a look and group some similar words together? I'm not sure how to do that. Or any other optimization you can make. Can it be made possible so no one can use those words in the project? Maybe only crats/admins? Link - I hope to learn from your actions and maybe I can use that information in the future while I add or remove words from it (or on any other filter). Our speedy deletion filter would benefit a lot from being only crat/admin allowed too.
Also, can you take a quick look at all our 5 filters here and see if everything seems to be all right and maybe optimize the syntax of some of them if that's needed? @Klein Muçi: Sorry for the late reply. All of your filters can be bypassed if you have a confirmed account (or autoconfirmed). This is good, because more experienced editors are less likely to vandalize and hence any hits on the filters would probably be false positives. Filter 3 is the one exception, which looks for an edit count less than 50. To restrict to admins, you could replace user_editcount < 50 with !("sysop" in user_groups) (I assume your crats are also admins). You could check for any number of specific groups with something like !contains_any(user_groups, "sysop", "bureaucrat"). I quickly looked at your filter implementations and they look good to me, and appear to correctly working too. You can't delete filters like you can a page. Instead, you just mark them as deleted so they don't pollute the list at Special:AbuseFilter. Hope this helps! Sounds like you have everything you need, but as a FYI, we have many AbuseFilter experts at WP:EFN, and mw:Extension talk:AbuseFilter also has many watchers. Final question: Is there a way to group similar words together at our 6th filter? The list just keeps getting larger and larger if I put every possible variation of a word/expression. If I'm not wrong, I've seen some of your anti-vandalism filters work by groups like that.

@Klein Muçi: Yes. There are many features of regular expressions you can take advantage of. It's a bit too much to explain here, but if you want to learn more there are ample resources online. The token to match any given single characters is probably one of great use. So ab[cde] will match "abc", "abd", and "abe". Just remember the more complex the regular expression, the harder it may become to maintain. Also note that without word boundaries some other words are inherently matched. For instance pordh|pordhe|pordhë could just be pordh because the other two include "pordh". These two tricks should trim down your list some.

Imports of templates/modules

Hey MusikAnimal, I was curious why you imported a bunch of templates/modules on April 1? Especially since it appears they were imported from Wikipedia, given that's the interwiki prefix that was used for the usernames. I noticed this after importing some of these templates/modules to another wiki and looked through the changes only to see most of them had no actual changes and some interesting edit summaries. It was a mistake :( See this discussion. What actually happened was I was importing templates from both Meta and enwiki into another wiki, and at some point I got my browser tabs mixed up and imported a Meta template here. Amazingly it didn't seem to cause any noticeable problems since that template originated here too, but I did make this edit to my personal CSS to ensure it doesn't happen again. Some Thoughts about the Edit Counter

Hi MusikAnimal,

despite the IP-adress, I am a long term contributor with account in the German Wikipedia. I use the edit counter since a very long time and am always happy to see how many people read my (mainly politics-related) articles ;-) Hence, thank you very much for it.

To the hard facts: I have some ideas for improvements. Firstly, in the German version which is directly linked (though with a very small font) under each article on the very end of the page as "Abrufstatistik", the first item appearing directly below the graph on the counter page is "Seitenaufrufe", which roughly means "page impressions" or "single reads". Random Example: CIA. As you can see, in this article this is about 14.000 - but: There is no reference time span provided to which this number is related. For me it is easy to calculate that it is the whole month, but by a newbie or persons not having any clue about the popularity of the WP, this may easily be wrongly interpreted as the "Overall Count" since whenever. Hence, it would make great sense to provide the reference time span directly behind the term "Seitenaufrufe" or so. I understand that this might be not as easy due to the fact that the user can change the time span.

Second and more signifcant to me: It would be great to have an "Overall viewing count" since day 1 of the article - shown as a standard without having to modify the chooseable time ranges. This creation date might also be provided, e.g.: "Since the creation of this article on 12-10-2004, it was accessed 26.736.925 times." This is of course not of great practical value, but would give an (no question) astonishing impression to each viewer and particularly to the article authors, because I think this would generally make for an impressive number - further signifying the relevance of the WP, but also giving the authors some joy ;-) And to be honest: For the hundreds of hours of work put into it, the sense of achievement (from other folks than other WP authors who often just complain and critize) an author gets is awfully low, namely and typically zero ;-) I assume that the summing up over years can not be carried out each time the counter is accessed - maybe this might be solved by doing it only once a day (or even less often) and caching this result, or similar. The number needs not be exact to the per mil during the whole day, I might add ;-) Just my 2 cents - otherwise, a great tool. Hello! The Pageviews Analysis tool (not to be confused with the XTools' Edit Counter), should say the date range directly below the chart and on the left side under "Letzte". However it sounds like you're talking about changing the text of the link on Wikipedia. For this you just need to change the interface page de:MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyright.
