Can you and @Cyberpower678: reactivate this bot. It used to mark shared IPs of schools and High schools used for vandalism. Today i found out about this bot which has become inactive since 2012. --Galaxy Kid (talk) 11:30, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

@Galaxy Kid: Per the BRFA, this needs consensus. I was considering implementing something to archive old warnings into Twinkle. That would clean out many talk pages quickly, without the need of a bot — MusikAnimal talk 15:18, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Looking at an IP, its not possible to know whether it belongs to a school. There is bot which blocks proxy IPs. I was thinking if there would be a bot which would automatically put the school IP/ Instituion Ip whois message on top of the IP talk page, it would save the time of users. WHOIS is slow. Sometimes I do whois and don't get any satisfactory result. How the others found that the IP belonged to a college, Library, i don't know. IPs may even change from a user. If a bot updates the latest WHOIS detail it would be time saver. I am able to track school IPs as someone else already did the job months ago. A bot that does all the WHOIS work isn't a bad idea, but expensive. Still needs consensus, maybe post at WP:VPP? For the record, I regularly run WHOIS's on IPs and am able to decipher if it's a school, and it goes pretty fast for me using domaintools.com. Ballot spam

Thank you for removing the ballot spam from my talk page.

I was looking around for somewhere to report it, and you already removed it for me. I removed the last spam from Gyrofrog's talk page, and I think all of the spam is gone.

Recent changes? As in my userpage? I'm trying to think how that spammer would find us, and only a select number of users. It might have to do with who was online at the time, but I'm probably way off. Twinkling

Hey MA, is there a way to add {{Uw-castesanction}} as a custom template on Twinkle and make it work? It's there in my custom list (see User:SpacemanSpiff/twinkleoptions.js) but it's a two parameter template so when I try to use it via Twinkle I get error messages. NeilN hit the next point I was going to bring up. I tried messing around with the Ds/alerts too by trying to add the parameters within the template but it didn't work for me. I sometimes just let Twinkle add the base note and then I go in and modify the parameters in the next edit. If you click preview after choosing Ds/alert in custom warnings you'll get the drop down list of all this stuff, just that there's no place to add the choice to. You can try adding the three custom warnings I have on my list MA, those should cover the permutations and combinations for all sanctions or pre-sanction warnings (the templates may vary, but the parameters would be the same). —SpacemanSpiff 15:40, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Adding more templates to the Tag/Warn modules is such a common request... maybe as a start I'll just rework the custom warnings so as to allow for parameters to passed in, just as you describe. The big thing I'd like to do is set up "extensions", whereby you could source some list of warnings/tags from a different file, and maybe also full-on extended functionality. So here we'll have something like Template:Ds/alert/Twinkle that lists all the necessary code. Then in your own Twinkle config you'll add extensions: [ 'Template:Ds/alert/Twinkle', 'some/other/extension' ]", and it will just work. Easier said than done, for sure, but again given we get these types of requests so often I feel it will be worthwhile.
Finally I will be sure to make note of the Twinkle discretionary notices extension in our upcoming, fully comprehensive admin guide! — MusikAnimal talk 15:59, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, yes, but did you notice that Quran Scholar did get a message a second after you (Diff of User talk:Quran Scholar)? I have M:User:Hedonil/XTools (very useful) in my global.js, normally that together with the part of User:Equazcion/ExperiencedEditorPack that highlights admins should have warned me, but that function of EEP seems not to work in draft space. No worries! I am not offended. As I said this should be the responsibility of the notification script, e.g. what if I wasn't an admin? You shouldn't have to do all that checking. WP:VPP/WP:VPR

Hi, are you're still interested in a VPP / VPR on the new Help:Introduction to pages for MW and VE and bringing up the idea of integrating those pages into the tutorial/training/welcoming pages and templates? @Evolution and evolvability: Wow! I did not even know about the other Help:Introduction to pages. This is fantastic, and exactly what I've been looking for when linking newcomers to guides. I am a big fan of this model that breaks it down into easy to understand components, with a clear progression and easy navigation. So yes, I am in favour of increasing the visibility of these pages. Just take a moment to look at what we have now... Wikipedia:Introduction 2 (just links to other guides), the enormous page Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia which is linked to on Wikipedia:New contributors' help page and other newbie pages, meanwhile Wikipedia:Plain and simple doesn't look that appealing, etc. The intro pages in my opinion should be the full extent of where we send newcomers. I mean Template:Wikipedia help pages is just downright scary, though we could keep that template and reserve it for the intermediate guides. I guess what I'm trying to say is the public-facing links from the most visible templates should go straight to newbie guides.
I don't think we'll run into much opposition updating the visible templates to link to the new intro pages, but it's probably worth getting more input. I guess we need to do an audit and list which pages we plan to update. Certainly the {{welcome}} templates used by Twinkle and other semi-automated tools should be the first to be updated, I think. — MusikAnimal talk 17:47, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
The original format, I think, was pioneered by The wub back in 2012 with WP:INTREF. I've since formalised it into a {{intro to}} template, and made a little {{intro to box}} navigation box. Also, Moxt has done a pretty good job of piping in links from around the maze of help pages to go to the relevant Help:intro to pages. Certainly some of the standard new-editor welcoming templates might be worthwhile linking from, although I don't really know anything about that sector of Wikipedia.
My eventual aim is to replace the main WP:T with something that offers WikiMarkup and VisualEditor together as alternatives (like the Help:Intro to navigation page). I'm also not sure whether Help:Referencing for beginners with citation templates and Help:Referencing for beginners without using templates are necessary given the existence of WP:INTREF and WP:INTREF(VE). Done, and for the record I've tried and tried and tried to get a cron to restart it automatically, to no avail. I even had the Labs admins have a look at it, and they can't figure it out either. (talk page watcher) Might want to try kicking it off with "set -x" and then "env -i". In my experience if a job runs from command line, but not cron it's either depending on an environment variable in the users profile, or the job needs to be started with a particular working directory. — Strongjam (talk) 20:57, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

NeilN and Cyberpower678, I think I fixed it!! I was told the "attribute caching" (phab:T106170) issue was resolved, but apparently not. I did a stat webstart.sh and bammo got the email of a successful restart :) Not sure why I didn't try that until now. Anyway, it's restarting the service once daily. I think that should suffice. Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [2]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [3]

  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Hi, MusikAnimal, it was I that reported the Peer-Reviewer language URL issue to Dispenser. Thank you for fixing it. I was able to use the tool, but I had to excise the language portion each time first.
Do you have any pull with the XTools! gadget bar? When I click on the Pageviews link which has a tool tip of Wiki ViewStats Tool it takes me here to a page that says "NO WEB SERVICE AVAILABLE" ... not currently serviced.
The -Page watchers link is blacked out.
The "See full page statistics" drop-down is all blank. The link goes here which states "no revisions found".
The (edit count) displayed is lower that what Preferences reports.

Yes Hedonil disappeared and parts of xtools slowly started breaking as none of us were able to figure out how it worked. The articleinfo tool has been offline for quite a while, and we should probably remove the tab from xtools interface, or change it to link to WikiHistory. The WikiViewStats tool has been offline for even longer. That being said repairing the gadget is probably a lost cause as it depends on these other services. Page views will soon be available via a new and far more accurate API provided by WMF ([8]). I suspect interesting gadgets and tools interacting with this new API will follow once it's deployed. Multiple issues

  • Hey @MusikAnimal: I've 2 issues to present to you today.. but I'm sure they can be quickly resolved. First off is that I cannot run AWB. I have extracted all of the contents I received upon download to a folder on the desktop called "AWB". When I try to run AWB, I instantly get a message stating AWB had already stopped working and that Windows was looking for a solution to the problem. Because my computer was taken away, it running Windows 10, I am currently using a Windows Vista laptop that really only works in safe mode. I have configured the registry, however, when in safe mode, all services will still turn on. So, my first issue is that I cannot use AWB. My second issue is that I'm having trouble turning on your Nightpedia script and would love some detailed instructions as to how to enable them. I tried putting the script in my /commons.js but nothing happened. Thank you for your attention! Please leave a talkback template on my talk page when you have replied. Hey CatcherStorm, AWB should work on Vista. I would first read all the docs and check the FAQ at WT:AWB. If you are still having trouble you can seek assistance there, as unfortunately I'm not a Windows guy and don't know what to tell you =P Glad you got Nightpedia working. It's very much a work in progress, so any feedback you may have is welcomed. Right now it's best fit for reading articles, but I want to make it look nice for editing as well. The following IP address has been purposely vandalizing and attacking Wikipedia user pages and articles "for the lolz": 79.220.28.225. Context can be found on its talk page. @CentreLeftRight: The new IP has not edited in two days, and the older one in over 4 days, so blocking may not be the best move right now. I can however semi-protect your user page, if you would like. User talk pages are not normally protected, but I would note the usage of {{User:UBX/user talk vandalized}} on Eteethan's talk page might be perceived as an open invitation to vandals. AWB

While studying Wikipedia:PERM/Nav, I noticed the AWB link that goes to the Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Other access page. Maybe it's me, but that made me think that I was supposed to have gotten the AWB user right before using AWB, which I've been using for some time now. So specifically, is this a formal user right that is granted, or is it a more informal "permissions" that does not require a granted user right? (Sorry for my confusion about this.) @Paine Ellsworth: Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! You are correct that there is some confusion with the PERM nav. Originally the link said "other access", matching the page name, and not "AWB". I eventually went in and changed the link to AutoWikiBrowser since that was the only thing that page entailed. So to answer your question, no, it is not a formal user right. AWB requires your username be listed on the CheckPage, which only admins can edit. So users request access much in the same way they do user rights, which is why we bundled it in with PERM.
An unrelated side note... I see your signature contains invalid HTML, which can throw off syntax highlighters. You can change it to the following and it will appear the same as it does now, but will be valid:

New file version, incorrect setting

Hi Musikanimal,

I have overwritten File:EurovisionNim and a girl at 2015 Social.jpg, however the image continues to be at the same version. I use a Macbook Air and I use Google Chrome and I have done everything that is required, example is I have cleared out my cache and the image is still in the earlier version, which is completely wrong. Yes, however when I place it on my editnotice page. When I press new section the notice comes up and then the same problem has occurred on Commons with my image and then when I wake up the next day it is in the condition I expected. Hi, Musical Critter. I noticed there are banners about the 30/500 restriction at Talk:Nair and Talk:Jat people, which state that "Edits made by accounts that do not meet these qualifications may be removed" and it doesn't count as edit warring bla bla. I was a little surprised. Isn't the restriction supposed to be done automatically by filter, so that non-qualified users can't edit the articles? Maybe I've missed some change. @Bishonen: You always make me laugh! :) Yes, those banners evidently predated the filter. Users who do not meet 30/500 criteria should not be able to edit either of those articles. I keep forgetting about this... last I recall we were looking into asking WMF for a new level of protection altogether? Mmm... community consensus for a new level of protection altogether? I only remember vaguely what was said about that, because frankly it was vague to me — I didn't understand it very well. Wrt caste articles, why would we need more than the current AE decision? Alternatively, if this new level is meant to be something that can be applied to any article, by a single admin(?), then yes, I do think community consensus is needed. Such a big change wouldn't be arbcom's business. But perhaps I'm misunderstanding you. Anyway, here's a musical critter for you. :-)

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [9]

Problems

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [10]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [11]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [12]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [13]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [14]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [15]

AbuseFilter parameters

@Samwalton9: You can see which permissions are enabled for each user group at Special:ListGroupRights. I think there is a way to view the raw .php configurations, but not sure how. I do however know that any modifications will require WMF involvement — MusikAnimal talk 17:37, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Cheers! I've been thinking recently that there are some situations where having the block function could be very useful. In particular, filters designed for a particular LTA where the target is prone to making repeated attempts against the filter until they are successful, get blocked, shift to a new IP and start trying to navigate around the changes we made to stop the edits that got through. 731 is a good example right now. Being able to block them on their first hit - requiring them to shift to a new IP before just their second edit attempt - could be a great deterrent. We'd have to make sure that any filter with a block action had zero false positives for a substantial amount of time or hits and some kind of community consensus for blocking, but I think there's some scope for this being useful. @Samwalton9: I agree wholeheartedly, there are other filters where I've wished I could have it block. But if modifications are made to such filters, the block function will have to be disabled temporarily. Did you see WP:EFN#Post-mortem? I didn't author that filter, but the point is our most prolific of EFMs are still prone to making mistakes, with drastic repercussions. Before we add blocking to the equation I think we should drill everyone to be super super careful and always always check disallowing filters against recent edits using the batch testing before hitting save, and actively monitor the filter for at least an hour after modifying it, and continue to monitor it occasionally for some time thereafter. I've seen two major incidents occur in the past 5 months, the other where innocent unconfirmed users were accidently disallowed from participating in talk page discussions – very bad! There might be other similar mishaps we're unaware of. I don't think is a very good track record to convince the community to allow blocking functionality. With the disallowing filters the user can at least report the false positive — MusikAnimal talk 16:34, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
Good point, I agree entirely. To get the ball rolling on the block option I've started an Idea Lab thread to see what the community thinks about this. We should discuss the testing of disallow filters separately and definitely before any RfC about the block option, probably after the current RfC has finished. For now go about your business, and if there's a dispute of sorts please try to resolve it civilly as you would with any editor, and refrain from edit warring. This is turned around. I added some cited and significant material to the David Lisak article. Someone deleted that additional material based on reasons that keep changing. I made some edits in response to his/her concerns, discussed them on the article's talk page, and then restored the original text. I have achieved consensus with two other editors (see David Lisak article's talk page), including using 3O to attempt to reach a settlement. The deleting editor then trivialized 3O. I will proceed to the next arbitration resource. In the meantime I am doing my best to avoid an edit war, but I believe the article should not be censored in the meantime. I asked the deleting editor to stop reverting until we can get more opinions. JCvP 01:57, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

@Giooo95: I saw your reply at WP:PERM/R. I truly have no idea what it could be. You're using a modern browser, no conflicting user scripts, and we don't believe there to be any conflicting gadgets. Your WP:JSERROR report mentioned nothing out of the ordinary. Some things you can do to troubleshoot:
  • Try on a different computer
  • Try on an alternate account. If you don't have one, create one and let me know so I can assign the confirmed user right and you can try out Twinkle. Alternate accounts must be declared, so just FYI you should put a {{user alternative account}} userbox or something similar on the userpages.
  • Try including the gadget in your JS directly by putting importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js') in your Special:MyPage/common.js
In the meantime, you can still manually revert a series of edits just as rollback would, see Help:Reverting. The manual reverting feature is something I still do regularly, for instance if multiple editors have vandalism. In that case rollback would not suffice. Popups also has includes a feature to restore a specific revision to a page. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 06:25, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

@Giooooo95: If you added that code to your common.js it will load Twinkle directly, in addition to the gadget. The fact that you're seeing the preferences dialog twice means the gadget is in fact loading. You can probably remove that from your common.js now as we've proven the gadget loads by itself. Nope, still nothing at all. The TW menu just showed up on your talk page, but clicking on the Warn link to see if the links would work produced nothing. The .css is for Cascading Style Sheets. Using the .js or .css trick should probably not be used for drafting articles, or anything really other than JS and CSS code. I presently use User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD to relist AfD discussions, which requires several steps: opening a separate AfD discussion from an AfD log page, using a pull-down menu in the "More" tab, scrolling down to the relist entry, and then performing the action. I was thinking that a script that includes a relist checkbox on AfD log pages for each discussion would really expedite the process, which could be used by people that have it loaded on their vector.js page. In this manner, one could tick discussions for relisting and then press a "magic" relist button somewhere on the page to perform the multiple relistings.
