Recent changes

  • In UploadWizard, the dialog to see an image preview has been removed. You already see the images in the thumbnails when you upload them. [1]
  • UploadWizard dialogs look a bit different now. They have been updated to the new OOUI look. [2]
  • You can now edit music scores in VisualEditor. You can add new sheet music scores and get live updates when you edit one. [3]
  • When you send an e-mail to another editor using Special:EmailUser, that user will now get a notification on the wiki as well. [4]
  • You can now see 500 images when you upload images from Flickr with UploadWizard. Before this change the limit was 50. [5]
  • The Wikimedia mailing lists have been upgraded. [6]
  • MediaWiki developers spent a day looking at proposed code changes in Gerrit. The goal was to clean up the backlog and give feedback to volunteer developers. [7]

Problems

  • Some visitors had problems reaching the Wikimedia sites for an hour on September 24. [8][9]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from September 29. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from September 30. It will be on all Wikipedias from October 1 (calendar).
  • There will be a new beta feature that allows editors to use Flow on their user talkpage if they want to. Each wiki can decide if they want to enable it. [10]
  • The Content Translation tool can give translation suggestions. This feature will now be available in more languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Turkish, Japanese, Italian, and Catalan. [11]

2nd Annual GA Cup - Round 4

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - Round 4

GA Cup competitors and observers: Happy Fall! Get ready, we're about to move into the finals of the second-ever GA Cup!

Monday saw the end of Round 3. Out of the 8 contestants in the semi-finals, 5 have moved to the finals. The semi-finals were competitive. Our semi-finalists reviewed a total of 61 articles, or a grand total of 1,151 points. If you were to lump the top winners from each of the three pools together, it'd be a close horse race; they were within 35 points of each other, which can only mean that the finals will be an exciting race. Tomandjerry211, our top scorer in Round 2, again earned the most points in the semi-finals, with 288 points and 16 articles reviewed. Johanna came in second overall, with 251 points and 13 articles reviewed; Sturmvogel 66 came in third overall, with 221 points and 16 articles. Rounding out our wildcard slots are Zwerg Nase and The Rambling Man. These contestants were very strategic in how they reviewed articles. Like every other round in the history of the GA Cup, success depended upon reviewing oldest-nominated articles. For example, Johanna reviewed 5 articles that were worth the highest possible points. Congrats to all our finalists, and good luck!

Stay tuned to this space for more information about the 2nd GA Cup, including overall statistics and how this competition has affected Wikipedia. We regret to inform you that Dom497, one of our original judges and co-creator of the GA Cup, has stepped down as a judge. Dom, a longtime member of WP:WikiProject Good articles, is responsible for the look of the GA Cup and has been instrumental in its upkeep. We wish him the best as he starts his university education, and are certain that he'll make an impact there as he has in Wikipedia.

Revdel on contribution screen

Do you know of any tool or script that will allow admins to revdel from a user's contribution history screen rather than going from article to article? --NeilN talk to me 18:25, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

So I guess you mean being able to use the checkboxes to selectively delete revisions? Or mass-revdel? In that case I'm not aware of such a script, but sounds like a good idea. @NeilN:Well, here's the first draft, such as it is: User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/massRevdel.js. Unfortunately, it looks like the revdel API call won't work on more than one page at a time--if you try to submit revisions from multiple pages for consideration, it'll only actually delete the first. @NeilN: K, both should be fixed now. Musik, I batched them by page name, so that at least we only have to make as many calls as there are pages, not individual revisions; a little better. Neil, that checkbox shouldn't show up any more (it'll still be the del/undel link that it normally is; that link is why the checkbox showed up in the first place). Seems to be working to spec so far. I think we should list all the admin goodies at WP:NAS. New admins end up going months without any semi-automated assistance, completely clueless that there's so many scripts to make their lives easier. Just checked and looks like there's also a Wikipedia:User scripts#Admin scripts that badly needs updating. The thing is at WP:NAS we could show how the scripts would be used in practice (for instance needing to delete a bunch of pages in a category, you can use Twinkle) — MusikAnimal talk 21:15, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Yeah we'd want to notify existing admins as well. Scripts not working on Wikipedia articles

Hello MusikAnimal,

My account scripts are not working on any Wikipedia articles. Some examples are twinkle and reFill. I am trying to edit this article for example, by reformatting the citations automatically. On the tools sidebar it does not show up. Also when I access Twinkle and attempt to rollback an edit, despite having rollback rights it does not allow me to. It has been working for a long time until I logged in today. I don't know whether it could be a computer bug.

This is how it is supposed to be for me when reverting edits

The link shows how it happens on the main articles when I am attempting to make an edit. It only comes on the user pages, talk pages and Wikipedia policy pages. I need you to find out what the problem is because users who use Twinkle and reFill might find it difficult to edit. They may not use the rollback feature on Twinkle. Hello from Amphitryon AR

Hello, I wonder if you can help me with the following: There's an article about Hyung-ki Joo (pianist and one part of Igudesman and Joo) The problem is that the article's title / Wikipedia entry title is: Richard Hyung-ki Joo. I don't know where the "Richard" comes from, but the artist himself assured me that he is not called "Richard"! Hyung-ki is a bit disappointed that every Journalist falls for this Wikipedia fault. Is there any possibility that we delete the "Richard" from the title? @Amphitryon AR: Well given none of the sources state "Richard" as being part of his name, I think it's safe to say there's no reason for it to be in the article. Instead of deleting, I've moved the page to the appropriate name at Hyung-ki Joo. You currently have made only 2 edits using your account. After you make 8 more, you will become autoconfirmed and will be able to move pages yourself. Delay (again)

Okay, you worthless New York techie, I demand satisfaction. Really, @MusikAnimal, it's driving me batty. You don't want me to go nuts, do you? At least not any more nuts than I already am? If you didn't get anywhere at IRC, what about me reporting it as a bug? Even better, what about you reporting it as a bug? Haha Bbb23 sorry to hear you're still having trouble! We could file a phab report but let's first try to some troubleshooting. I haven't noticed a big delay lately... A few questions:
  1. What browser/OS are you using?
  2. Go to speedtest.net and let me know how fast your connection is.
  3. What gadgets do you have enabled? Just go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets, select the list of gadgets using your mouse and copy and paste them in a collapsed template like:

    ...crap ton of text...
    {{collapse bottom}}
  4. Is the issue persistent? As in does it happen more or less on every page load?
If we do file a phab report we'll need this kind of info to help reproduce the issue. If the culprit turns out to be too many gadgets/scripts enabled, we can look into some workarounds. — MusikAnimal talk 22:18, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Give me some time, @MusikAnimal. When I went to do the gadget part, I discovered some gadgets checked that I don't need. In fact, I'm not sure when I checked them or if they were new and came on as checked by default. Anyway, I unchecked them, so let's see if that improves things before we plunge ahead with the troubleshooting. BTW, I used to use those kinds of speedtest pages, but I uninstalled Adobe Flash as it was causing me too many problems (it really doesn't get along well with Firefox) and had very little value as far as I was concerned. Generally, my speed is about 50Mbps down, 5Mbps up.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:42, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
I was avoiding coming back here hoping that it would all just go away. It did seem to improve right after I removed some gadgets, but even if it's more intermittent than it was before, it's still relatively persistent and the delay is still not at an unacceptable level. Yeah that's not very many. I see "searchFocus", "Twinkle", "HideFundraisingNotice", "ReferenceTooltips", "WatchlistBase", "WatchlistGreenIndicatorsMono", "UTCLiveClock", "purgetab", "dropdown-menus", "OldDiff", and "contribsrange". None of those looks like they'd slow things down too much... though you could probably remove "Add a Purge option to the top of the page", as you can purge the page by click the UTC time at the top-right, or using Page > Purge cache in the dropdown menus. Going to look over your user scripts next, where I see you also don't have very many! I'll get back to you soon — MusikAnimal talk 17:24, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

I don't use any other browser to edit Wikipedia. I could try it on another browser, but (a) I'm not sure what would have changed with the browser several weeks ago to trigger this problem (and Firefox is used by a significant number of people, including Wikipedians) and (b) although I think Firefox has gotten worse over time, I don't like the alternatives. I don't suppose you could test it with Firefox? I also wonder what browser Redrose64 uses.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:02, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

@Bbb23: Yes, Win7, FF 40.0.3, your scripts, css and gadgets, beta features on/off and it still is smooth for me. It could be due to the recent changes to mw:ResourceLoader Redrose64 mentioned (If so I'm puzzled as to why I'm not able to reproduce it), but I'd like to discount any other issues from your side first - a plugin/adblocker, antivirus software or an ISP issue. (For eg. phab:T112110- Various resources reported to load intermittently due to Avast antivirus). Could you try another browser and see if it persists? - NQ-Alt (talk) 13:51, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not keen on trying another browser. Maybe Redrose64 would be willing to do that given that we are using the same version of FF (although our configurations of the browser may of course differ). I will give you some more information about my environment, though. I use Avira antivirus. I do have Adblock Plus installed in FF. I've used it for a very long time. I have other extensions, but, frankly, not many compared to many users as I don't like most bells and whistles generally. Also, I don't think much, if anything, has changed lately about my environment other than incremental updates to FF.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:15, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm beginning to believe it's on the Wikimedia side as well. There are "availability zones" scattered across the world that make serving pages faster to people who live there, so that might have something to do with why not everyone is experiencing the issue. I feel like so long as you're not editing from Easter Island you should be fine. We can file a bug on phabricator if you'd like, but it'd be better if we could confirm others are seeing the same delay — MusikAnimal talk 14:26, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Haha well there ya go :) Well I finally got a reply on IRC that there were recent changes to the way ResourceLoader works. Bbb23 when did the issue start? The change I (or the kind folks on IRC) suspect might be the culprit happened almost two months ago. I was told the "top" loading queue is now asynchronous which in general means page content loads quicker but scripts load slower. It should be obvious why that's preferred, as it's a content-driven site. There might be some workarounds, but could you confirm that the timeframe sounds right? — MusikAnimal talk 15:16, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not good with dates unless I write things down. I reported the problem on September 5, almost a month ago, and at that point it had already been happening for a while. Whether it was a full month before then, I can't be sure, but it could be right. In the past there've been slowdowns at Wikipedia for other reasons, and I may have initially chalked it up to that. Alright, well I'm told the ResourceLoader changes shouldn't have had much of a visible effect on users, so a few things I need you to try: (1) Go to speedtest.net and give it a whirl, let me know what the ping speed was, not just the download/upload speed and (2) You should try another browser. You don't have to permanently switch, but you should at least see if the problem persists there so we can narrow down the issue. Actually, try the pingtest and let me know the "line quality" along with the "ping" and "jitter" speeds. That will give a definitive answer whether there are latency issues — MusikAnimal talk 15:29, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

While I'm waiting for a response, I'm going to muse. What is this really going to accomplish? My response time when I enter en.wikipedia.org in my browser is instantaneous. Why are we trying to determine any latency? Anyway, assuming somehow this will produce useful data, what about entering tracert [IP address] from a Windows command prompt? Some online tool told me that the IP address is 91.198.174.192. Is that right? That's supposedly a server in the Netherlands. When I simply enter that address in the browser, I get a wikimedia error. While I was writing this, it occured to me that I might be able to enter tracert en.wikipedia.org, and, sure enough, Windows took it. The IP address Windows translated it to was 198.35.26.96. I'll try to give you the output, but some of the ms columns are not explained. There are 14 entries. The first is my router. It looks like entries 2 through 8 are all part of my ISP's network. The host name for entries 9 through 13 are all telia.net. #13 itself is a more complicated URL that has wikimedia in the first part (still ending in telia.net). Why would you think this user's edits were not vandalism? Numerous times this editor had edited airline destination tables to make "XXX Airport" (official name) appear as "XXX International Airport" (not the name). This repeated in the past 2-3 weeks and this user had been given successive levels of warning. Why isn't this vandalism? HkCaGu (talk) 17:33, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

@HkCaGu: Adding "international" seems like a perfectly legitimate contribution, given the airports do serve international flights, and the links redirect to the correct article. Similarly adding the name of the city makes sense to me. It's as if the user is trying to add clarity to the reader, but there's no way to know unless you ask. I see warnings about unsourced content for which this does not qualify. Disruptive, perhaps, but certainly not vandalism. Assume good faith, and explain why the edits are troublesome. It's true they have not responded to prior warnings, but I think it's worth trying to talk using your own words when they are clearly trying to make improvements — MusikAnimal talk 18:43, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
Addendum, you could argue warning about unsourced content is valid if you want to show the "official" name, which evidently does not include "international", but I don't think that's very clear in the canned warnings. Good idea! I could even have it detect who that admin is, so that they'll know. If I go that far, I should be able to hide the "unprotect" option altogether for when it isn't actually protected. The recent update should make that clear anyway. At Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, User:Kanghuitari has been given the right and the discussion marked with {{done}}. Looks like Miniapolis used {{done|done}} to mark the request as done. The bot looks for simply {{done}} and several other variants, as specified by User:MusikBot/PermClerk/Regex/Done. Non-automated edit counter down?

It is (was) down, and I don't know why that happened. There are several Labs-related issues that I've been trying to work with the server admins to figure out. Additionally, there's a very annoying issue with booting the app up in the first place. Yep the username must match exactly how it does here on-wiki. The first letter is always capitalized in usernames, and the tool was supposed to automatically capitalize it for you but I see that there was a bug – which is now fixed. Also happy to report that after several hours I finally figured out the "trial-and-error" issue of booting up the app! It now starts and works reliably.
Anyway, to answer your question... you can use numerous other edit counters to get the count of your deleted contribs (e.g. xtools, supercount). My tool heavily analyzes all contributions and omits deleted contribs for performance reasons. Moreover the main intent of the nonautomated edit counter is to see the contribs themselves, and you obviously wouldn't be able to see deleted contribs. Also note different counters may report a slightly different number of edits, as some rely on the replication database, the API, and may also have caching mechanisms. My counter uses the replication database and caching, so it may be behind production data, but not by much — MusikAnimal talk 05:49, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Well, Cyber marked it as done but it really isn't =P It's very close, though! I have a very neat tool I'm going to deploy soon. It features an API that I will have the bot use to do a one-time run and find all the files you're after. If it happens to come to the point where I'm suffering from fatigue and abandon the bot task, you will at least have the tool that should expedite your efforts. @Anythingyouwant: Okay! I've got an initial release of the sound search tool up and running! There's still more work to do, but hopefully you'll find this useful as-is. Check it out at toollabs:musikanimal/sound_search. During testing I found numerous composers who have unused files on Wikipedia, for instance, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In the result set, you can reveal info about the file (as specified by the "Information" template on Commons), play the file, and show which pages on Wikipedia use it. Each of those requires a separate API call, which is why we show the information on demand rather than by default show it, otherwise it'd have a significant impact on load time.

Now, I realize this lets you only query for one composer at a time, which may make your efforts to update Wikipedia:Sound/list take longer. But I got to thinking... and correct me if I'm wrong... but the point behind Wikipedia:Sound/list is to list all the free music files of notable composers, right? There seems to be a lot of maintenance involved, as you'll need to keep that list updated, and also the "backlinks" (what links to this file). So, why not use the tool? It's always up-to-date, and let's you play the files right within the interface. The only information missing is "performer", "comment" and "genre". I thought maybe we could add this information to the file pages directly in some uniform way, then the tool can go off of that. This would sort of phase out the Wikipedia:Sound/list concept and the considerable effort it takes to keep it up-to-date. What are your thoughts?

A quick explanation of updates I plan to make soon: Better API handling, as right now if there's server lag the tool may fail. I may convert some queries to go off of the replication database so this won't happen. Also I should be able to speed up the "List only files not currently used on Wikipedia", as we're querying the backlinks for each file individually when we could query for multiple files at once. This may all sound like gobbledygook to you but I thought I'd let you know anyway :)

Hey, that's very impressive. I think it will be an excellent tool for people who are focusing on a particular composer, which I sometimes do. You might want to add a third button "List only files currently used in articles", just in case people would like to know about that.
The main issue I have is the following. When I use the Sound Lists, all I have to do is focus on the column labelled "What links to This File". I gaze down that column, and if there's no blank space then I just keep on gazing down the column, and I only stop my gaze when I reach blank space, because that means a file is not being used yet in a Wikipedia article. So, I can scan through dozens if not hundreds of composers in less than a minute, if all the respective files at commons are being put to good use in Wikipedia articles. But using the new tool would be difficult for this purpose, because I would have to type in and do a separate search for each composer. This is the main reason why I think the Sound Lists are very useful and worth keeping and updating. Anyway, who wants a juke box that doesn't say what's inside it?  :)Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:12, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
The jukebox analogy is a great one :) I knew in its current state the tool wasn't going to fully offer what you wanted, and I'm content with what I have done, I just wasn't sure your approach and intent behind the sound list. The articles on composers probably don't change too much, or are subject to vandalism, otherwise I'd raise my point that they could changed by others while the sound list is not updated (e.g. the "what links to this file" could be outdated). If I had the time and energy, I could make a real jukebox just as you say, and how cool that would be! My goal here however was just to meet the bot request, which is well over halfway done. I built the API which the bot can now use, so it's just a matter of looping through the list of composers to find files not currently being used. About that... I could cross-reference against the sound lists, but figure just finding files that aren't being used would be sufficient, right? From there you can update the lists accordingly. A really cool thing about the sound list as it stands right now is that the "what links to this file" cannot ever become outdated. For example, if you take a look at Sound/list/A, you'll see that the first item under "What links to this file" is Adolphe Adam, but this will automatically be deleted from the Sound/list/A if someone removes the music file from that article. That's because the nifty code that I used to construct Sound/list/A is similar to the code you see at Wikimedia Commons for an image, where it says "File usage on other wikis" (i.e. that info is changed automatically when the file usage changes).
As for just finding files that aren't being used, I suppose that would be helpful, but it would be even more helpful to get files that aren't being used & that are not already listed in the sound list. That's because there are many files that are listed in the sound list but that are crummy, and so they shouldn't be included in articles....those files may be very poor quality or duplicates or redundant or whatever, and I've been trying to make a note of why they're not included (yet) in Wikipedia articles. I definitely would not want to list one of those files twice (or more) in the sound list.Anythingyouwant (talk) 03:23, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Ahh, well there was a catch-all on the script so that it didn't quit out on a fatal error, that way I could leave it running unattended. The composers that were skipped were logged somewhere and I can't find it :( In this case it was the double-quotes in the filename File:Op. 1 (vaterlands-bluthen) part01 - "andante maestoso".ogg, which should have been escaped. This is a careless error on my part, so apologies! I've modified the script, with proper logging, and am going to give it another spin :) This time going to write to User:MusikBot/SoundSearch/List2 so we can see what was missed. By the way, at the last minute I discovered the API "links here" endpoint is inaccurate. Turns out the backlinks for files are in a different table, inaccessible via the API. Should have ran this by you... for performance reasons the bot only looks in categories that contain any of the words "composition", "audio", "flac", "midi", and "ogg". Maybe I should add "Op."? I could go all out and let the bot go through every category, but we might run into issues... not to mention a significantly longer run time (not the bot gets tired or anything =P). Assuming that the bot gets approved, I'm thinking of deleting some stuff from the sound list before you run the bot. In particular, I would delete all the files that don't have the composer name listed. Then, those files would come up in your bot list with composer names, and I'd re-add them to the sound list. Hmm well the bot looks for files not currently being used in articles and not on the sound list pages. We could make it check just the latter, and that would address your issue I think. This is just a matter of me being lazy and looking for the easiest way to find the composer names for a bunch of files that are currently listed without composer names. Turns out there's categories that contain categories that contain the original categories... sending a recursive bot into an endless loop... who knew? I'm back! This evening I tackled only composers whose last names begin with "A". I could be mistaken, but it seems that your list somehow missed a bunch that should qualify for the list. If I spotted these omissions correctly, then there are probably lots more. Here's my list of stuff that apparently meet our inclusion criteria:

I only checked a few, but looks like those are already being used in articles. Did we want to go off of just the sound lists and not usage in articles? I thought we had decided not to. If possible, I'd like music files regardless of whether they're being used in articles. As long as they're by composers at list of composers by name, and are not already on the sound list, I'd like to add them to the sound list. Very nice.  :-) There's a bunch of reasons for having a complete list, aside from giving music fans a full menu. For example, having a complete list can give us an idea of what free music is missing so we can go try to find it and upload it. It also let's people quickly listen to many different music files to see which ones need to be filtered to create new files without scratchy sounds. Moreover, it allows editors to easily see which file names are nondescriptive so they can be moved to better file names. Etc. Etc. Wikipedia treats songwriters separately from composers, so maybe we'll eventually make sound lists for songwriters too. Cheers!Anythingyouwant (talk) 21:37, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

MusikBot and DYK

MusikAnimal, I noticed that the Current Nominations section hadn't been updated a few minutes ago, and when I went in to do the update, I saw that there was a comment added to the "Current Nominations" section header about it being automatically moved by bot. Only it hadn't been, and there were a bunch of incomprehensible errors in the error file.

I hope I didn't wreck anything by moving the section header down from October 4 to October 5 and by adding a new October 12 header so people can add new DYKs for that date. (I wasn't sure whether you were still testing, or if you'd gone live.) If you need to back something out, or if you'd like us to wait longer before attempting to repair/update the nominations file, please let us know. Thanks for putting the bot together.  Fixed The bot is under trial right now, and there was simple bug that caused this, which I've fixed. No need to worry about messing the bot up, it's programmed to handle this exact sort of thing. Congrats on finding and fixing the bug so quickly! I'm glad it had already stopped trying for the night when I did the manual update. It's also useful to know that if it hasn't updated after around 20 minutes (but check the bot log to be sure it's retried five times), then it won't try again that day and a manual update is actually appropriate. @Mww113:  Fixed The regex does something like {{AWBUser|(.*)}} and since you had the {{cite}} in your request it saw that }} and grabbed everything in between =P All it needed was a little ? character to tell it to only go to the first instance of }}. Anyway thank you for the report! Reverting was the right thing to do, although the bot would have just put it right back... so good thing I saw your message. Hopefully people will know to turn off the task at User:MusikBot/PermClerk rather than block the bot — MusikAnimal talk 04:59, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Extend protection

Hi there, could you please consider protecting Dasun Madushan again? It seems like vandals are at it again, right after the protection has expired. Or blocking the IP might help.
