Adoption

Hi MusikAnimal. I notice you've put a "request for adoption" template on your userpage. Given the number of users starting on the encyclopedia each day and the number who look for adoption, there can often be a backlog when just displaying the request. You are much more likely to find an adopter if you are pro-active about it, perhaps asking an editor or two from the list of adopters if they would consider adopting you? Another thing is I'd rather try to find a mentor focusing in my field of interest, which is mainly improving citations (dead links, etc), keeping things up-to-date. Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

I have no idea what this refers to. I am the FAO expert that selected Cuyabeno in 1975 and I single handed rescued Cuyabeno from being run over by settlers in the mid 80 by investing my money to start ecotourism. I gave the link to the FAO report which is on my website.

I am one of the world's most senior conservation biologists (look at birdlist.org) The info I put in on Cuyabeno is rock solid and much better that some of the previous nitwits that chose to put some garbage there. I have been to more than 80 countries under contract by the UN, the World Bank and a variety of Western Governments.

Most of the info on WP comes form my website cuyabenolodge.com as literal copy. As a result I had to rewrite the wording of the text on my website, so it would not be a literal duplication.

In hte past, I had completely stopped contributing my vast knowledge to WP because always nitwits knew better. My time is more valuable than to fight with people of much less competence who delete my texts.

Hey! I'm sorry you're having some trouble with your contributions and I apologize if my notice to you came off as at all hostile. Your vast knowledge of the area is not being questioned nor is your faith as a valuable contributor. While your recent edits to Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve appeared to be constructive, I felt that degree of factual information needed to accompanied by references. Wikipedia is not for original research, but solely for reliable, previously published information. Typically I along with other editors would simply tag questionable information as needing citations rather than remove it, but I felt with the already lacking state of this article more uncited content would only further degrade the quality. As for your website, it unfortunately appears to be commercially driven and therefore may not constitute as a primary third-party source. In other words, we need sources that aren't too closely related to the subject (Cuyabeno), such as a newspaper article or an academic publication. I have moved your contributions over to the Cuyabeno talk page for now where it can be discussed further. Perhaps you and I together can find sources to help verify your work. The only thing I tried was improve the value of the information of the article. It makes no difference to our Cuyabeno Lodge whether or not the information is correct, as long there is some info about the reserve and enough info is already there. So I have no commercial interest in improving this page. The argument that something verifiable published info has to be there is pure nonsense. Whomever quoted almost an entire page from our website did not verify anything; he/she blindly copied my texts. So why can't I write some text based on my 4 decades of professional history about CB based on my memory. I have not published my info, because I had other things to do professionally. But at least, my knowledge is far better and more professional than the info of other contributors.

Anyway, I don't have time for this. Just take what you think is useful and delete whatever you find unverified. This is the 4th time I tried to share something on WP over a period of probably 7 years or so and the 4th bad experience. I put my info and knowledge on my 25 websites (inter alia birdlist.org and others) that together have 1,000,000 visits per year and where people are appreciative of the info that I provide free to the general public. Dr. Vreugdenhil, I'm sorry to hear you've had such bad luck with Wikipedia. First off, I realize other contributors to this article have also done a poor job of citing their work, which unbeknownst to me was copied directly from your website. My goal as an editor was to back up this article with some reliable sources, so the addition of yet more uncited material I felt was taking a step back. I hope you can now understand why I chose to revert your edit. I also want you to know I did not accuse you of using Wikipedia as an advert (although this has been an issue with this article), I meant you shouldn't cite your lodge's website as a reference since commercial sites sometimes have subjective or biased views as a marketing strategy.
Back to the issue at hand, I think you may be misunderstanding the concept of verifiability. You don't need to publish your studies in order to contribute your knowledge to Wikipedia. By all means, enlighten us. But anything you do add must be verifiable. Wikipedia is not determined by the beliefs or experiences of its editors, but solely by preexisting published information. This reassures Wikipedia as a source of knowledge for all it's users. One can't assume the editor has professional experience. I encourage you to read over the verifiability article, which details this fundamental core principle.
Sometimes improving Wikipedia means making an exception, and I think this is one of those cases. Every editor brings something different to the table, albeit in this case at odds with Wikipedia policies, but the important thing is the willingness to help, and you clearly have that. I will move your work back to the main article, with the intention of citing it at a later time. Just please be careful as a contributor to always include references, as it is safe to assume any significant uncited edits will be challenged or removed.
Perhaps you could also benefit by familiarizing yourself with the five pillars of Wikipedia. I hope that following these guidelines you will continue to contribute to Wikipedia. Thank you for your time and efforts — MusikAnimal talk 04:52, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

I want to make it very clear: I did NOT cite my own website. When I curiously went on WP some time ago, I found a lot hof text from my website quoted on WP. After that, I rewrote the text on my website (editing, not the content), so that Google would not see it as the same text. I see that you even reversed the some editing errors that I had corrected. Job well-done. Musician from Boston corrects international expert with PhD on national parks management who selected the area and who has been involved with the area ever since. I have worked for the UN, World Bank, a variety of governments over a career of 4 decades with my experience spanning 80 countries. You just reminded me why I should not waste my time trying to share some of my inside information with readers. It simply gets deleted by salon authors like you. I don't mind if someone challenges my info, but I don't work in an environment where someone simply deletes my contribution. Domestic robot

Hey, I am Rachel. I am the one (I forgot to sign in) who removed the See Also section on the Domestic robot page. I didn't mean to completely remove the section; that was an accident. However, I would like to organize and rearrange that section. I think the links look sloppy, so I am think I might move some of the links to whatever section (In-Home, etc) that they are most relevant to. Sure! I do agree it looks a bit sloppy, however I'm unsure about moving "See Also" links to bottom of other sections, as it may conflict with Wikipedia's manual of style. Unfortunately, I won't have time to work on this for the next few days, but I'd be happy to check back next week. Since the "See Also" links are to other Wikipedia articles, perhaps we could find a way to include them inline with existing text, or with added information provided it flows nicely within the corresponding section. Pittsburgh Dad

Hi MsikAnimal, I recently edited the Pittsburgh Dad page, changing "Washington" to "Warshington," as the Pittsburgh accent, which is used in the show, pronounces "wash" as "warsh." Hey there! While your edits are clearly constructive, it is evident to me that you are unfamiliar with wiki markup and hence they were interpreted as test edits, which is why I reverted them. This is not vandalism, but persistent test edits can be a problem for you. Please remember to preview your edits before saving.
As for this new content, I disagree that Celebrity Juice would qualify as an entry in her Filmography. According to this she made but one appearance on the show, while the other entries in her Filmography she is playing a critical role. Perhaps we should create a Other Appearances section, which we could include Celebrity Juice. If Celebrity Wedding Planner is also a TV show and you anticipate but one appearance, I think it should be listed under the Other Appearances. At any rate I'm happy to help you do this. I do not! I reverted your good faith edit because you incorrectly tried to add a reference. We use inline citations within the article's body, and the reference are then automatically listed in the references section at the bottom. Take a look at WP:REFBEGIN on how to do this. You reverted an edit of mine for a reason I think is incorrect, I'd like to explain & see if we can agree

From your handle you may not in fact have been the actual human that reversed my edit on the topic of Shard (database architecture). (TW) . I'm guessing this because your page here and handle don't sound like this computer tech topic is up your alley, but hey we all have diverse talents. Assumning you did reverse my edit:

I was not trying to advertise, but in the case of software that isn't open-source but produced by some company, how CAN one make mention of where to read more about that software if not by a link to that company's site? The open-source software had similar links to their main page. There must be a judgement call in whether simply linking to a corporate page is "advertising or promoting". The open-source, or not-yet-used-doctoral-dissertation software mentioned here is equally being advertised or promoted ... the larger the community open-source or one-off software has the more prestige the authors get and that directly translates into $ (either a job or a promotion in their current job for most open-source group members - I know as I was part of one and have many collegues that are currently). If this makes sense to you and your reconsideration tells you my edit was not advertising but simply adding valuable content to the article, please re-put my edit. If you still disagree, I ask that you email me at atjolin@gmail.com (my jolin@us.ibm.com company email will go away soon as I'm retiring) and explain where my logic fails. Hey there, thank you for getting in touch with me about this. I am actually very familiar with database architecture, I am a web developer and use MySQL, Mongo, etc, but that all is irrelevant to why I reverted your edit. I patrol recent edits on Wikipedia and being human I do make mistakes. Wording like "highly-scalable" and the usage of the external link did appear promotional to me, but I can see now that this was not your intention. Lets re-add your work and improve on it a little. First off, external links should generally not go in the body of the article, but turns out there is an existing article for eXtreme Scale, so we'll use that. Secondly, I think the lengthiness of describing the software as whole might lend undue weight to this software in contrast to the others. Remember this section of the article is about software that supports shards, so we should stick to that topic and disregard other software features. Get more information about what words to watch for at WP:WORDS. Next, let's add a reference. You might be able to find a suitable one in the main eXtreme Scale article. All we need is a reliable reference stating this software supports sharding.
Last but not least, when you leave a message on a talk page (like this one) please sign your post by adding four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your post, this will automatically insert a signature with your username and a timestamp. I'd prefer if you talked to me on here but I will also email you.

I'm an extreme old-bie to IT (retiring in 2 months but not falling off the face of the earth ;-) but very newbie to wiki contributions (in fact, maybe this isn't even the right way to reply to you on a talk page ... sorry if not). I took your comments to heart and redid my edit on the shard topic, I'll look back here (not my email anymore) for whether you approve of the new edit or not. Thank you for your kind words! Regarding your revised edit, I only removed little part, It uses sharding as a fundamental part of its design in order to achieve scalability. We try to make articles as concise as possible, especially with technical language. The wording I removed is hardly technical, but does make the sentence more concise. If you think you can make it more concise feel free to do so. As for your reference, we base articles upon third-party sources, and since the software is by IBM referencing the IBM website would not qualify as third-party. However, this is a pretty minute detail. We just want to show that the software supports shards, nothing controversial or likely to be challenged, so in this case I think this sole primary source will is fine. Last thing, it is good practice to include an edit summary to explain what you changed in your edit. This may be especially true in our case since you and I are editing the same sentence over a short period of time, which other patrollers might interpret as being an edit war. Don't worry about that though, in my edit summary I've linked to this conversation.
And by the way, you are right on point with the talk page. Sometimes as a we'll indent our response with a colon ( : ) or multiple colons as needed. I'm indenting my response and you're inline with the left, easy to see the thread, all is well.
Hopefully I haven't overwhelmed you with these Wikipedia concepts. Take your time, be bold, you are off to a great start. Note also the Welcome links I put on your talk page. It's all good. The one phrase you removed was to note that sharding is not just an added feature or a minor function; in WXS sharding is indeed a fundamental part of its design. From my reading of the other entries it doesn't appear sharding is as fundamental to them, so I wanted to call this out. I will leave it up to you to add my phrase back in or leave it out. Hello! If you want to show your students how wikis work, the place to do so is the sandbox. There you are free to experiment and do any test edits you wish. Performing test edits on live articles is considered disruptive, as users might happen upon that page during the brief time you did your test edit, and see that Evil Knievel spent 29 days in a pumpkin. I see... you put your signature on a new line and preceded it with a single space, like so:

Howdy. This fight over the Queens bias has been a problem the last couple years, and I'm rather sick of it. We've had Prospect Park events before, and I would love a change. I am a Queens native, and I've fought for a long time over this, with arguments about lack of subway service. Haven't seen these threads but I'd hardly call it biased, accessibility is a big factor, and Prospect Park clearly has that. At any rate, I've been there tons of times, but zero times to Flushing Meadows. Hmm, no one was said you did anything to the Ares article...? The warnings you are most likely referring to were issued to the IP user 2001:5B0:27FF:1CF0:0:0:0:37. I'm guessing this is your computers IP, and when you were logged out someone else in your household made the edits to the Ares article. At any rate you have nothing to worry about. Your IP and your registered account are treated as two different users, so any actions taken against the IP user will not effect your account. Mullingar

Hello and thanks for reverting the unconstructive IP edit to Mullingar. This sort of personal attack has been appearing from different IPs every few months on Mullingar and related pages for some years now. The target even complained about it in 2011. Wow, thanks for bringing this up. I don't know if it's been done before, but I've requested page protection as a result of persistent vandalism. Specifically I asked for pending changes protection, which is the lowest level of protection, below the more common semi protection. This will allow other IP and unconfirmed users to make constructive edits, which must then be reviewed. Nepotism

Hi,

I'm assuming by your lack of response that the template can be removed as unsourced? And that you will stand behind me if I do it? (judging by your reaction to my mild attempt to introduce the issue into the article)? There are no sources or even mentions in the article regarding narcissism, not enought to justify the template. I was not aware that the narcissim template was appended to this article; even so I don't think this would necessarily imply that someone practicing nepotism is suffering from narcissim. In this case I would refrain from assuming such a connection and start a discussion on the templates talk page. No need to add to the ambiguity. You don't assume a connect between a template on an article page and the article content? (I don't understand that reasoning.) I have started many discussions with Penbat, but he just flatly disregards my concerns. Penbat is persistent in defending any attempts to clean up the template. You should look at it. Not Wikipedia's finest hour. Penbat doesn't understand the term "narcisism" and has a vested interest in his humongous template. No one has the energy to go through what it takes to clean the thing up. My attempt to at least introduce the topic narcissism into the nepotism article body would start to draw attention to the problem, and perhaps force Penbat to add some sources, but that was reverted by you, so it's hopeless. You reverted my attempts to introduce the subject of narcissism in Valley girls also. You may not be aware that introducing needed information into an article to justify a template is okay editing and an attempt to help the article. It points out that the information is missing. Sorry, allow me to clarify. Clearly some editor has concluded the two topics are related. I think assuming that practicing nepotism could mean one suffers from narcissism is a big jump. They are both categorized under Discrimination as related articles, as opposed to narcissism being categorized under nepotism. Hopefully you can now see the distinction between categorizing two articles as being directly related (which was not the case to begin with), as opposed to the two being children of the parent topic of discrimination. If you are still concerned about the connection, the template talk page is place to discuss this. Just try not to jump to conclusions. It is odd that narcissism isn't mentioned anywhere in the nepotism article, so I think that may warrant removal, for now, however we should still start a discussion on the narcissism template talk page as nepotism has yet to be removed from that template. Please understand I'm trying to help. What I was trying to say is that introducing more ambiguity does not solve the problem, especially since you made a connection that wasn't stated to begin with. This is much less of an issue of noting flaws in article but rather the approach to do so. I think you were right in removing the template, so don't stress it. I realize this was difficult to indicate to the reader that such connection is being questioned, as there is but a template at the bottom rather than actual context to refer to in the body of the article. Your reasoning is right on point, I merely disagreed with your approach. Finally, it should be easy to see how your original edit was misconstrued as a good faith edit yet didn't contribute much to the article. I told you on your talk page to get in touch with me if you had questions and I am glad you did. It is important to remain civil until a consensus can be reached. As I said I will be tied up in the near future, but we are safe to leave things as they are for now until we can discuss further.
