Would it make more sense to redirect this article to List of United Kingdom by-elections (1832–1847)? Given that it was an uncontested and uncontroversial by-election, it doesn't seem like it will ever include more information than is on a line of the table there, and maintaining it as a separate article just seems like unnecessary overhead. Choess (talk) 15:46, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Choess:- I would err on the side of keeping it; when people search for these things, often they want a simple and immediate answer. Redirecting the page to a list will put the Wikipedia article dealing with it (which people look to as a quick source) far, far down the search and mean people either have to go an find the info for themselves from the original source or be left without the info altogether.
I think also if it were to be redirected, there would need to be a concerted effort on the part of someone to do this to other similar articles. Just scrolling down the list a bit there are loads of other articles in the same boat (1833 Morpeth by-election, 1838 West Suffolk by-election, 1842 Liverpool by-election, 1845 East Cornwall by-election, 1845 West Suffolk by-election, 1846 East Suffolk by-election are just the ones I found in a few minutes). I think if what you proposed were to work, we'd need to deal with all of these (and all the other similar ones that are no doubt out there) and have some sort of a guideline on it, so that there was a clear line on this of what should have a page and what shouldn't. Gazamp (talk) 16:39, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I assign very little weight to the SEO argument—the by-election has essentially zero intrinsic interest (it's only of interest as an aspect of the constituency as a whole or the careers of the two MPs), and I think readers are only likely to access it via one of those pages rather than directly from the Internet. (A Google search with terms "east cornwall", 1845, by-election turned up the East Cornwall constituency as the 2nd result, incidentally.)
That said, I had the impression that there were some guidelines for redirecting by-elections like this, and from what you say, that isn't the case at present. I might pursue developing some at some point in the future, but it's not a very high priority, and I don't intend to start redirecting articles like that without a thorough airing of the matter among the community. Thanks for your response, and happy article-writing. Choess (talk) 19:27, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Choess: I see your point on search engine matter - I think either way there should be a guideline on it. I haven't come across any and by the looks of it, neither have other editors who have made similar pages. If you find there's an existing rule, do pass it on - it'll save me making pages that'll just get redirected later. Thanks for bringing it up Gazamp (talk) 22:04, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ShropshirePilgrim Sandbox

You made changes to my sandbox at 07.00 today, altering the categories I had attached to a draft article I am working on. Basically you reinstated categories for St Petroc's Church, Bodmin, and indeed I used that page in my sandbox as a basis for my total re-write on a different topic (related to a different religious building in Bodmin). The extant article for St Petroc's church, Bodmin retains its categories and has not been changed (yet) in any way, by me or by you. So I am undoing your changes to my sandbox draft. Trust you don't mind! ShropshirePilgrim (talk) 16:32, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ShropshirePilgrim: - I didn't change any of the actual categories on your sandbox; I only added a colon at the beginning of each to stop your sandbox showing in the category space. I thought this was standard procedure (that user-space pages shouldn't be in 'main-space' categories)? Gazamp (talk) 16:39, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation - it did seem a bit odd, but I'm always glad to learn just hope I have! ShropshirePilgrim (talk) 00:50, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Gazamp, I noticed your interest on WP:Companies to improve company articles. I have COI with a few companies. There are some errors and inaccuracies that need to be updated on those articles. Thank you a lot for helping me and giving me some advice, I'm still confused a little bit. How is it possible to find out turnout? Thanks again. Neverbuffed (talk) 17:47, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For all these elections you need to work out turnout yourself. From info on the Cornwall Council website, you can do this by calculating Total votes / electorate, both of which can be found under the 'voting summary' heading. Also, rejected or unmarked ballots aren't generally used in turnout (and anyhow, the difference is often negligible). Happy editing, Gazamp (talk) 17:53, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cornwall Council wards

Hi, just a quick message in regards to your creation of article for wards of Cornwall County Council. Generally the articles are titled as Newlyn and Goonhavern (ward) instead of Newlyn and Goonhavern (electoral division), and furthermore, the Template:Infobox England and Wales ward is used instead of the one you have been using. Thanks – SɱαɾƚყPαɳƚʂ22 (Ⓣⓐⓛⓚ) 15:01, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SmartyPants22: Hi there! Thanks for your message. Regarding the use of 'electoral division' rather than 'ward', this is because that's what Cornwall Council uses, and what the pages in Category:Electoral Divisions of West Sussex (which I used as a template for the earlier articles) went by. Regarding the use of the ward infobox, I found the UK-place infobox to be easier to use quickly and better looking for the information I can find.
On both of these counts, I'm open to a wider discussion after I finish the rest; I'm currently working against the clock a little to complete the current divisions in case the sources start to disappear after re-districting at this May's elections. Personally, I don't feel that either of these factors have a great impact on users (though Category:Electoral divisions of England and Category:Wards of England might be better merged), so I'm really not fussed of going back through all of the articles I've made already and changing them. If there's anything else, do let me know! Thanks, Gazamp (talk) 19:00, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SmartyPants22 and Gazamp I just saw this. Please note that we have the page Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, which explains the difference. I wouldn’t support using one of the two words, “wards” or “divisions”, to mean both. In particular, there is the problem of two-tier areas which have both wards and divisions, where the separation is useful and needs to be understood. Moonraker (talk) 12:06, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Moonraker: I didn't realise there was a clear difference, but it's useful to know for future reference - thank you! Gazamp (talk) 22:57, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Stephen Randolph (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This disambiguation page contains the primary topic and one other topic for the ambiguous title and no other topics can be found within a reasonable time.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:03, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
