Question from Chosen one two three (05:57, 3 February 2024)

So I need help with spreading information that is not from reliable sources that is not factual evidence why would I need help with that because I affectionate evidence that I support and that will support my corrections of this misinterpreted website that doesn't have factual information and that is not reliable I'm trying to bring some reliability to this site but for some reason my first reliable message was deleted with them five to 10 seconds and now I can't get a response from the computer that deleted it in 5 seconds but it's been 30 minutes since I sent three messages --Chosen one two three (talk) 05:57, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Any information you add to Wikipedia must be verifiable. You can read more about that here: Wikipedia:Verifiability. If the information you want to add is not from a reliable source, you can’t add it. If you think some existing information is incorrect, you could open a new discussion on the talk page of the article and explain why you think so. You can read more about how to use talk pages here: Help:Talk pages. You will have greater success if you take care to compose a message that is thoughtful, civil, and is focused on how to improve Wikipedia. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 09:47, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CreativeSweet (17:58, 10 February 2024)

Hello Mentor. Designer Janene Higgins' page had a maintenance template on it from a previous editor. The ad-like copy has been redacted, I added requested further references/citations, and I have no COI. The page is basic and pretty straight-forward. So, I removed maintenance template. Put this information in my edit summary. I hope this is within Wikipedia regulations and the edits can stay - please advise, thank you. --CreativeSweet (talk) 17:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @CreativeSweet, welcome to Wikipedia. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to remove the advert tag, because a previous user already removed most of the advert-like content. It looks like the COI tag on that page relates to edits by a previous user who made a lot of edits in a pattern that makes it look like they may have had a conflict of interest. I’m not sure that issue is wholly resolved, because the sourcing is still extremely thin. I’m not sure this would pass our notability guidelines, particularly the guidelines for when an artist is notable. Are you aware of any further significant coverage in independent, reliable sources that provide information about the subject? As it stands, the article is at risk of deletion. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 07:55, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Springfaerie (16:38, 15 February 2024)

Hi, how do I add pictures do an artist’s page? --Springfaerie (talk) 16:38, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Springfaerie, welcome to Wikipedia. There is a guide on how to add pictures here: Help:Images. However, please pay close attention to the image use policy: Wikipedia:Image use policy. Most images are not suitable for inclusion due to their copyright status. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 17:07, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Burnst Jamp (01:32, 17 February 2024)

Hi there! I'm not new to Wiki editing but I am new to editing on Wikipedia itself, with its higher overall standards. I currently have an article submitted as an AfC draft: Draft:Karl Koch (Weezer assistant). I'm worried that parts of the draft may fall under WP:BOMBARDMENT (although of course not intentionally)—certain sentences have 2–3 attached citations (sometimes to reinforce information, sometimes to cover more than one claim). As an experienced editor, is your first impression of this page that it misuses citations? What do you think is the likely reaction a reviewer would have to it? Do you have any advice on how the draft may be made as encyclopedic and guideline-adhering as possible? Thank you! --Burnst Jamp (talk) 01:32, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Burnst Jamp, welcome to Wikipedia. On first inspection, it looks like you’ve done a great job. I don’t think overcitation is an issue. For a new article, the first and most important thing to check is the notability guidelines: Wikipedia:Notability. I think this subject would also fall under the notability guidance for artists: WP:NARTIST. I haven’t done an in-depth analysis, but my first impression was that many of the sources are passing references to Koch rather than in-depth coverage. Which would you say are the 2-3 best sources that provide the most significant coverage of Koch himself? These are the ones that would prove notability. Also, some sources may not be independent (e.g. anything published on an official Weezer site may count as a self-published source - WP:SPS). But overall, this is a really good start and I suspect it may already be ready to go into mainspace. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 08:02, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the in-depth response!
Proving notability has been one of my main focuses over the course of creating the page. I do believe that the individual is, at best, on the fringes of what Wikipedia deems notable. He is factually important to the development and popularity of the band and he is often mentioned or contacted to provide information in reliable articles/books on the band, however significant coverage is more difficult to find. Nonetheless, I have submitted the draft because I feel as though I have been able to build a case for notability with a handful of solid sources. Upon submitting it, I wrote a brief entry on the draft's talk page explaining my rationale and providing some context. A condensed list of important sources is available there.
Re: WP:SPS, there are numerous citations on the page which I would agree are self-published or otherwise primary sources—including interviews with Koch and links to his personal website. These sources are used mostly to confirm biographical claims about Koch, indicate the existence of his own musical releases, or to provide sources for quotes from Weezer band members. In some cases though, arguable self-published sourced are the sole evidence for certain factual claims (e.g., "In 2014, the official Weezer Fan Club was revived by Koch and a fan named Lisa..."). I worked under the impression that, given notability has been proven by a sufficient number of solid sources, certain relevant claims could be included and proven using sources that wouldn't be deemed reliable/independent. However I may be wrong in this assumption! Please advise.
Re: Conflict of Interest, the Weezerpedia wiki is official in that it has been included on the official band website as a social media link and it is paid for/hosted by Koch (since 2014). However, admins and editors are not paid, personally selected, vetted, nor affiliated with Koch or the band. And, although I do occasionally communicate with Koch, neither he nor the band have suggested or requested the creation of the article. I became interested in authoring the page because I am a fan of Koch's work and I feel as though he is sufficiently notable for Wikipedia. I hope this clears it up!
Apologies for the length of this response and for any typographical errors (I am writing from a phone). And, again, thank you for the helpful response and kind words! I hope to contribute to this site as constructively as possible and it is helpful to get the opinions of an existing editor while I'm learning the ropes. Burnst Jamp (talk) 15:21, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Limited use of self-published sources can be OK within the rules on WP:ABOUTSELF. Personally, I'm convinced by the sources you've highlighted on the talk page that notability is achieved. The Chicago Tribune article from 2001 is probably the best. I asked for the text of the deleted version of this article to be recovered, and have placed it here: User:Barnards.tar.gz/Karl Koch (musician). I was curious to see whether it had any usable material for the new article. I'm not sure it does. I also wondered whether it included that Chicago Tribune article. It didn't, and it's unfortunate that nobody identified this source during the AfD discussion. The new article is much better. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 21:26, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to ask, since you are an admin on Weezerpedia, and it’s an “official” wiki, do you have any connection to the band yourself? Our relevant policy would be: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 08:07, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Seckrates2024 (09:36, 24 February 2024)

Hi, I’m planning in creating a Page for a Business that I’m helping with. Can you guide me on how I should write it so that it’s still following the guidelines?

The Business name of it is “St. Louis Sod Install”. Yes, they are registered in St. Louis and are paying their Tax so that if we need to show those, I guess I can take it from the actual owner.

Let me know what’s needed to be done like the outline on how i should write it. Thank you --Seckrates2024 (talk) 09:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that a small business like this is a suitable subject for an article. You can read more about what counts as notable here: Wikipedia:Notability. The other relevant policy is Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 17:30, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Grizi fu (10:55, 11 March 2024)

Dear mentor I have a question. Recently I have been not edit waring but rather having an edit skirmish with a non registered user that doesn’t provide any sources to their statements and I would like to ask is it possible to have a page at least be temporarily be locked for non registered users? It’s also a page that has been reviewed as a good page and I would hate for this page, as it’s a topic I am really interested in to loose said status. Greetings Grizi fu. --Grizi fu (talk) 10:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Such locking is possible, in cases of serious disruption. If you are talking about the edits to Cambodian–Vietnamese War, then it seems to have died down with the text that you want in place? However, I notice that at one point you added a source which is unlikely to be suitable to support a statement in the infobox (seems to be a primary source). Infoboxes are for at-a-glance summaries of uncontroversial information that doesn't need a great deal of nuance or context to understand.
You might like to read Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, which is a common method of resolving disputes. Since your change was reverted, rather than continue to un-revert (which, as you've observed, usually makes for an unproductive edit war), a sensible next step would be to open a discussion on the talk page and explain why the content should be added. You can give your reasoning, and any opposing editors can give theirs. Hopefully you would arrive at a consensus, but if not then there are further options for dispute resolution. Question from Hardshell Baptist (17:01, 9 April 2024)

Good to get some extra help & insight to what & how things work on Wikipedia--thank you! I have done ! edit. It is an add-on last paragraph to The Nest, under the Plot category. The Nest is a Jude Law movie. I had just seen the movie and felt that the ending while subject to different interpretations, deserved a little more input on the page. Would you go to that listing & look over my addition of what is now the last paragraph under Plot? If you have some suggestions for improvement, I'd be happy to get them. thanks again, Hardshell B. --Hardshell Baptist (talk) 17:01, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hardshell Baptist, welcome to Wikipedia. It seems that your edit was reverted by another user, and I can see why - it reads less like a plot summary, and more like analysis. This is considered original research, and one of the principles of Wikipedia is that we don't publish original research. The policy can be read in full here: Wikipedia:No original research. If you feel that including some plot analysis would improve the article, you will need to find a source that provides this analysis so that you can summarise it in the article. It's important that the article only includes information that can be verified in a reliable source. You can read more about Wikipedia's core content policies here: Wikipedia:Core content policies.
