Scope

Stilts, roller skates, skis, where will it all end? We need some consensus on what is a vehicle here, before we add handbag, high-heeled shoes, briefcase, umbrella.....Nankai (talk) 00:07, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting point! The Vehicle article defines a vehicle "A vehicle (Latin: vehiculum) is a mechanical means of conveyance, a carriage or transport", but I should note that it isn't referenced. I think we need to start with a good definition of vehicle. My Macmillan dictionary says: "device designed or used for transporting persons or goods, as an automobile, sled or carriage." The Ontraio Highway Traffic Act (place where I happen to live) defines: "“vehicle” includes a motor vehicle, trailer, traction engine, farm tractor, road-building machine, bicycle and any vehicle drawn, propelled or driven by any kind of power, including muscular power, but does not include a motorized snow vehicle or a street car;". Those maybe a good start! - Ahunt (talk) 00:29, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What is the list intended to include? Space hopper and Sled seem out of place, and perhaps crampons. The sled article mentions horse drawn sleds, and down-hill sleds I'm sure there have been human drawn sleds in history, but they aren't mentioned. Down-hill sleds might be better described as gravity powered than human-powered; I assume down-hill ski (bindings) are exclude while other skis are mentioned is due to them not being human-powered. Space hoppers are toys more than a viable form of transportation. Of course, many of the listed vehicles are used recreationally, but most can be sensible means of getting from point A to point B in certain circumstances. If space hoppers are included, should stilts and pogo-sticks be in too? It's a stretch to consider crampons a vehicle (skis and ice skates too, but at least they involve a motion beyond walking). All they do is faciltate walking. Should hip waders and swimming aids be considered vehicles? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.249.208.181 (talk) 05:28, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
