Alternative treatment

This week my Feldenkrais trainer recommended me the work of David Webber, which is supposedly to revert the effects of Uveitis through Feldenkrais learning.

"Suddenly in 1996, at the age of 43, David Weller lost his eyesight, due to a severe eye condition (uveitis), and was declared legally blind. Remarkably, he regained much of his vision by working with the practical principles of The Feldenkrais Method. As someone who has had uveitis (also referred to as iritis) please DO NOT take down that image. Iritis is one of the most painful things I have ever experienced as a part of my Crohn's disease. Cry me a river if you guys are startled by the image; at least you haven't had to experience it along with steroid injections directly into your eye to treat it. Man, that image is too graphic to be there without warning. I came here from a link for gray eyes, because it said they could be an indicator of this condition (which I'd never heard of before) and had to see something like that? THIS IS NOT RIGHT. Even for a site with as little censoring as possible, there should still be some common sense limits. This image has been there since 2007. Come on. Can we please find a less-nightmare-inducing replacement image? Please? Or at least hide it behind some kind of content warning. I'm all about freedom / anti-censorship. I'm also all about people learning what a certain disease looks like. But this is a completely shocking picture --- it literally inspires shock and fear. I've recently been diagonsed with anterior Uveitis and although I don't look as fearsome as that photo, I get the impression that most of the above posters are probably young people who (being invincible and immortal, of course) don't like to be reminded that this could be in their future. You often find that type of comment on Wikipedia pages, such as "eewwwww do you have to show that photo of dead animals (say on a page re Pork or something), that's so like gross like eeewwww" This is an encyclopedia, not a social networking organisation, get used to it. I have emailed my Immunology Prof to ask if he has any public domain material he'd like to release to me - I'll replace the current image with a diagram or histological section (or possibly a fundus picture) and move the other photo down. Iridocyclitis

Anterior uveitis (= iridocyclitis) may cause severe eye pain accompanied by abdominal pain or other systemic pain. This "referred" pain makes diagnosis difficult and has led to over use of expensive hospital emergency room diagnostic modalities (e.g. MRI, spinal tap). Severe ocular pain may also be a manifestation of acute angle closure glaucoma. A person who comes to an emergency room complaining of severe eye pain must be seen by an ophthalmologist if the emergency room physician is not confident of his/her ability to diagnose anterior uveitis and acute angle closure glaucoma. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.38.52.194 (talk) 23:51, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganisation

There's a lot of good stuff here but it's horribly inaccessible. I'm thinking of regorganising things and making it more accessible to people who come here after being diagnosed. There are some awesome resources out there but people often come here before digging about for other support groups. I'm going to go for something like the Crohn's Disease article:

  • Classification
  • Cause
  • Symptoms
  • Pathophysiology - Th17 mediated disease progression
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
    • Steroid Refractory Uveitis
  • Prognosis
  • Research

I did a bunch on this for my undergrad Immunology dissertation so I've got the stuff near to hand. I'll see if I can find any histological sections to move the current image further down the page. Started work

So I started adapting and porting in content from places. There's a lot of work to do, I'm new to Wikipedia so it might not be perfect. The next two things I'm going to do will be to sort out the diagnosis section (sort of left it hanging there) and tidy up the causes and associated syndromes bit. Capitals and lower case

I appreciate much work has been done by SingularTaxon, and I've left that as-is, but have edited out the unneeded capitalisation of common nouns. Of course, I have left proper nouns capitalised. Add Link to Uveitic Glaucoma

Hello,

Can we add a link to the uveitic glaucoma Wikipedia page under the prognosis section? It currently just links to the regular glaucoma page, which is also linked to earlier in the article in the introduction. The Uveitic Glaucoma page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uveitic_glaucoma) is currently an orphan page and does not have any other articles linked to it.

Wikipedia Course Peer Review
Excellent work with reorganizing the article and editing the lead paragraph, epidemiology, and prognosis sections! Everything reads well; the only section I found challenging to digest was the Immunologic factors, but that may have been due to the level of details and complexity of the pathophysiology.
Applause for:
  • Including citations for original writing
  • Addition of anterior uveitis as the most common type of uveitis plus its associated symptoms
  • Re-organization of the article
  • Addition of newer treatments like intravitrial injection and disease-modifying anti rheumatic drugs
  • Links within the signs/symptoms section, especially for anterior uveitis, look great
Suggestions:
  • I wonder if the pictures for uveitis could be labeled? I noticed the anatomy picture also doesn’t have the word uvea on it (as the uvea is composed of multiple structures, could draw a bracket on diagram and indicate which structures are included)
  • Maybe quick blurb about prevalence of noninfectious or autoimmune causes and listing the most common 1-2 causes of each before listing all the different causes
  • Move the keratin precipitates picture up to the anterior uveitis section where it is described
  • I wonder if a short description of synechia could be included (similar length to description for busacca nodules
  • Adding an arrow to point out the hypopyon since the overall picture is a bit jarring and the shock factor might detract from the finding
  • What are your plans for the “Research” section?

Thank you for your helpful advice! I have moved the keratin pic, and added to the blurbs. Not sure how to edit the pics so leaving that for future Wikipedians!
